How Did I Get Waitlisted By Duke?

^^most schools plead you NOT to reserve your spot on the waitlist “just to see.” you could effectively take someone else’s spot whose DREAM is to go to duke. don’t be a jerk.

lol you said pretty much the same thing i did…

omg i’m a senior member!!!

That is bull, why don’t you actually think about what you are saying? Why would it matter if someone was on the waitlist “just to see”? If someone gets in off of the waitlist, they have a very limited time to make a decision; if they reject the offer of admission, the school will just give it to the next person! Regardless, they will fill the same number of spots until they have the required number of freshmen in their incoming class. There is no such thing as “taking someone’s spot” in the matter of admissions, you are just possibly delaying things a bit, but no reason to sacrifice your own options.

The OP clearly exemplifies why I would never want to go to MIT over Duke.

I did not really read through your other posts, but I think the whole “volunteering at McCain” thing sums it up. They are a little less close minded… Anyway, they don’t want you… No one wants a cocky, stuck up, arrogant, audacious, impetuous, kid. It is not because they thought they would not yield you, they would have waitlisted you.

Have fun at the other colleges. kbye.

“Volunteering at McCain” sums it up? Don’t get political.

Since when did liberals become so insulting of other viewpoints? Since always. To them, the only viewpoint that’s right is their own.

The OP may be cocky and arrogant, but to insult John McCain and Republicans/conservatives, and to use that as a basis for insulting the OP is outrageous. John McCain is a great man who has dedicated/risked his life for YOU and for the values that make America so great.

I agree with the majority of the above post. I’m not going to say all liberals are like that, but I have noticed recently that I (a conservative leaning moderate) am a whole lot more open minded to others’ beliefs than many liberals I know.

In short, the OP may come across as arrogant, but his volunteering for McCain has no connection to his arrogance and in no way sums up the reason for his waitlist at Duke.

okay! off the political stuff, because we all know how heated THAT can become, and back to the original question:

dear op,
you got waitlisted by Duke because they needed people that fit thier profile, and you didn’t. There are people who got rejected who would kill for a waitlist at Duke, so stop being cocky

If I were accepted by MIT, I would go to a night club and dance, rather than starting stupid threads in CC :)

I think you didn’t get in because of your income bracket. Because you’re family does make so much, it affords you more opportunity to do more things. Not to be mean, but your ECs look are not acceptable due to a lack in volunteering hours (not to discredit your work at the McCain campaign, but many students volunteer over 300+ hours). It is not my opinion, but many members in society expect you to do more, just because you don’t HAVE to work just to get by, and because you are well-off. My final note is that you can’t write about the topics you have decided to an admissions committee (especially one with such academic prestige as Duke University). Although not all colleges officially ban some topics for the essay, it is expected that an academic who attends Duke University would write on a more scholarly topic. Sorry if it this reply seems rude, but you wanted to know, so the truth was told.

174IQPartier— MIT is an amazing school and if your not interested in duke please don’t stay on the waitlist. I am duke waitlisted as well and duke has been my dream school since literally kindergarten. although more than likely if you refuse the admission offer they give you they will just offer it to another person, there is always the chance they decide not to. So please please please don’t stay on the waitlist just to see… btw i volunteered for mccain too… and considering i haven’t seen mccain bow to any kings lately, he totally would have been better

Picture the admissions counselor…24, female, left-leaning politically, its 1:30am, she’s had 3 Cokes and one Starbucks and a cold slice of pizza and she gets to your file #60 in a pile of 200 that she has to get through by morning and she reads the phrase “Young Republican”, might as well set fire to your Duke sweatshirt right there. I enjoyed my years at Duke but as a conservative Californian I’d recommend it only with reservations.

You enjoyed your years at Duke? What did you go there for? According to your posts, you’re from SoCal, and you just got into UNC and waitlisted from ND undergrad. Not sure how you’d be qualified to classify Duke’s political leanings when you’ve never attended. Duke does lean slightly liberal, but compared to most elite colleges, its student body is actually quite balanced. but I guess your #1 choice is ND, so that clearly is one of the more conservative schools in the nation. yes, compared to ND, Duke is liberal, but that doesn’t result in automatic rejection/waitlist for those that identify themselves as republican.

Yep went there, had an apartment off of Swift, so I do know what I’m talking about, used daughter’s post thats all

Wait, I thought they do not consider your income bracket when you apply? Aren’t the undergrad admissions and financial aid offices separate?

On the admissions application you answer the question “Are you applying for financial aid?” If you answer no they assume you are to affluent to qualify for aid. They also ask the professions of your father and mother, as well as what colleges they attended and what degrees earned. Thus they form an idea of your income and social strata.

Whether or not you are applying for aid only matters when you are an international student. Otherwise, admissions is need-blind for US citizens and permanent residents
