How did I not get accepted? Recourses?

Mechanical Engineering Transfer
3.65 GPA
All required courses completed (~70 semester units)
25 hours work/week (At NASA)

Is there any way to get them to look over my application again? What should I do?

Dude, they must have some seriously wacky formula to pick their students. I’m really sorry to hear about that. Where else did you apply? Just 'cause you didn’t get into one school, doesn’t mean you won’t get into the rest. You’ve got good stats. I have no doubt that you’ll get into some good schools, if you applied.

That’s what I don’t understand - this is a STATE college, how high is their bar? It’s not like they’re some Ivy league school…I do not get it…wish someone would explain it

Scroll down the page for transfer admission statistics.

[College Search - California Polytechnic State University: San Luis Obispo - Cal Poly - Admission](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

All that I can say is that you all have better of had a back-up plan… SLO is nationally competitive.

It’s not technically and Ivy League school but competition is just as fierce. That’s how I have to explain it to my family so that they understand; “It’s like the West Coast version of an Ivy League.”

Have you seen these?.

But it’s not… that’s why so many rejects are confused.

Cal Poly has to be one of the most schizophrenic university I have ever read about.

One moment people on CC are dumping on it as a worthless CSU, or just another “state college” for UC rejects.

Another moment people are calling it a West coast public Ivy.

So which one is it ?!

Cal Poly has a good reputation because of it’s engineering program. It’s business program is not bad either. CSUs are generally an quicker, easier, and less expensive transition into a career. I know of some huge corporations that routinely hire people from Cal Poly over UCs (Boeing, Lockheed Martin, etc.).

That is a real bummer that you didn’t get in. There is a chance to resubmit your application now that you have not gotten in, but it should indicate something has changed since your first application. Maybe a good GPA hike, extra curricular activities, skill sets, more experience. Even though you do work at NASA. I know your GPA has to be competitive, because I had a 3.71 and applied for Aerospace engineering and got in, but your major is also the most impacted and should not even be compared to any other major at Cal Poly except it’s family of engineering majors.

If you really really want to go to Cal Poly, then resubmit your application and make it sound very interesting. Otherwise, choosing another college would be better than waiting. There are also Spring semester transfers if you would be interested in that. If you applied to UC Davis or San Diego, you probably got in one of those and they’re probably the next best choice. Either way good luck, and if you want to wait and try to transfer there again, go to Cuesta Community College in SLO.

My personal opinion is that you have no recourse… Cal Poly makes it difficult to change majors… and to get in… just the way it is. They need no explanation… the most qualified get in… period.

Whining that it’s unfair is just that… whining.

No public ivy.

Cal Poly is one of 23 campuses in the California State University system that has a social mission to the people of California and locals throughout San Luis Obispo and its county. Now, of course, some people would like it to become so. Particularly those who got in when admission standards were not as stringent and are now rooting for the school to become something that wasn’t when they attended. Also, those “moms” and “dads” on these forums who have a student there, and self-indulge on the though of having an offspring attending a so-called “public ivy”. Talk to a real academic at Cal Poly and I bet he or she would burst-out laughing at the mere though, as they should.

No, Cal Poly is not a public ivy; it’s, however, a fantastic public university.

Mechanical engineering has to be one of the hardest departments to get into these days. Wasn’t as bad a few years ago, so you have to be carefull about looking at past year’s statistics.

I would call them and ask what it took to get in this year. See how far or near you were from it. For high school admits, they just look at your GPA and your SAT/ACT scores. Not sure what they use as a criteria for transfers. If it is similiar, then the NASA work means nothing. They probably expect all required courses to be completed. Ask what criteria is used. I believe you can ask to have your app re-examined, but if they use the same criteria and nothing’s changed, the result probably won’t change.

Your username is “calpolygay”, good sir. Clearly you are bias in regards to the question - are you a cal poly reject? Don’t be a sourpuss about the school. I agree that it isnt a public ivy, but that doesnt mean “real academics” would besmirch it. One of my Professors is a graduate of Johns Hopkins and Dartmouth, two highly regarded universities, and he told me he chose to work at Cal Poly because in many ways its better than schools like Dartmouth, and far less expensive to attend. So I would say its relatively close to being a public ivy. Its acceptance rate is only 30% and thats only going down.

@CarpeNoctem77, you are replying to a thread that has been silent for over 5 years.
