How did my friend get in with mediocre stats?

<p>I purposely didn't put the name of the school b/c you probably wouldn't have looked at the topic then :D</p>

<p>Anyway, my friend got into UCI and his stats were something like:</p>

<p>Asian-Indian, high income
3.5 GPA (I'm not sure if this is UC weighted or unweighted. If it's unweighted then he probably had around a 3.7 UC GPA)
1080-1110 SAT score. I can't remember exactly but somewhere in between here. Yes this was on the old SAT.
Volunteer at hospital and member of some clubs.</p>

<p>He got into UCI during the 05-06 year, which surprised me because his stats didn't seem good enough. Anyone know why?</p>

<p>UCI isn't that hard to get into.</p>

<p>Are you sure? People with 2000+ on their SAT's have told me they didn't get in.</p>

<p>Yeah, UCI isn't competitive. But they're probably smart enough to turn away the people with 2100 SATs and awful GPAs.</p>
