How did this happen?

I'm just curious as ever. My friend, who is female and of Indian descent who scored a 1470 on her SAT and a 34 on her ACT did not make it into UIUC under "undecided" (LAS)

Her essays were proofread by me and three other people, including english teachers.

Just how did this happen? I know those are just figures but .. I'm just in shock.

When did she apply? What was her gpa/class rank? How were her ec's/reccomendations?SAT ii's?

I'm also shocked that somebody with such good standardized test scores got rejected....but maybe other aspects influenced that outcome.

She applied before the deadline so that's not a problem. I'm pretty sure she's within the top at least 25%. UIUC doesn't look at recommendations or SAT IIs.

When she called back after getting the letter, they said there was no mistake, she was rejected.

It can happen. She might have applied too late. I know someone else who had good standardized test scores, a good gpa, was involved in swimming, and both of his parents went to U of I. He was rejected and ended up going to the Indiana University.

I would be inclined to think that she might have applied too close to the deadline because tons of kids who apply early in September and November are practically admitted right away.

Even if it's close to the deadline, I remember UIUC extended the deadline even (well on the website it said so) so that must have meant that they lacked applications instead.

i don't know if u of i considers your highschool act and sats for transfer admission but take a look at my highschool stats (which they said i HAVE to send in): 850 SAT, 14 ACT... yikes!

now due to these stats i had to attend a community collge, my first year at a community college my gpa was 2.79.. second year it was 3.47..hence giving me an overall gpa of 3.17. i still didn't think i was going to get in to uiuc with these stats; and attending there never really crossed my mind because i knew i was nowhere near capable of atteding such an institiution. so i applied to uic well ahead of the deadline; guess what? even after SIX months i got NO decision..i was pretty sure i was going to get in there... ; so by this time i was running out of time because i had not received a letter from uic (which i would eventually, but after more than 6 months), so i applied to uiuc (i don't know what i was thinking--uiuc was out of my league! --but for some reason i applied) and within 28 days, i got my "get ready" letter! =) i was SHOCKED! i didn't know what to make of it... i felt like somebody was playing a silly joke on me - but obviously not since i attend uiuc-- my first sememster here now.

btw, i was getting ready to go to illinois state(which i got in) when i was in the process of applying to uiuc.

now, uiuc was not the only (really good) school i applied to, i applied to bradley university.. which is pretty good too and i got in there as well but decided to go to uiuc because of financial reasons.
