How did you choose your major?

Being completely honest with yourself and us, did you choose your major based off genuine interest, or did you choose your major thinking "this major will increase my chances in getting into x field"?

I'm the first; choose my major based off genuine interest. I couldn't imagine torturing myself for 4-5 semesters taking classes that I hate and have no interest. I would be miserable.

Genuine interest in the content of the major as well as the career path. I’d hope that everyone is interested in their major. It’s just that some people sacrifice their main interests and/or passions to pursue studies in more lucrative fields. I didn’t do that, though.

The major i’m interested in requires you to pay for schooling and training that will top into six figures of debt. So, I’m majoring in something that I have some interest in that makes a lot of money. If it doesn’t workout, then i’m going to follow my second passion, law enforcement.

I like computers, I find business somewhat interesting, good job prospects.

e: I also took intro courses in a few other fields I was interested in and they just didn’t grab me.

My parents have always pushed me to be in Comp Sci, but I haven’t really been that into the jobs in the field. However, I wanted to major in something that could make money, but nothing that would bore me. Then I found the Computer Game Science major, and I got all giddy and excited. So I chose that, with a minor in art (hopefully digital art soon) and it makes me happy now. Making games is a lot more fun than making computers.

My thought process: What would I actually enjoy learning and talking about? And so my major and concentration were born.

Took AP Psych, listened to college psychology podcasts via ItunesU. “Hey, psychology is awesome and interesting.” Bam. Major chosen.

Off of genuine interest.

1st major: picked out of interest
2nd major: picked out of interest also, but not quite as strong interest as major #1 (plus parents wanted me to have a second major)

I’ve always been interested in psychology, and now I’m adding Consumer Science in case I don’t go to grad school, so that I can potentially make some money in life.

Genuine interest. Pretty much in high school, I weeded out everything that I couldn’t imagine myself doing. It was a long list: nothing STEM, no health care professions, no liberal arts. So I was pretty much left with business and communications. I didn’t want to do journalism or communications studies, so I ended up with advertising which, fortunately for me, I’ve always been interested in. It’s not really a money making profession, but oh well.

You majored in “consumer science” in hopes of making money?

I stood no chance in advanced math for my major in computer science, so I switched to English. I do not regret it, and my grades are better.

Genuine interest. I don’t see myself being happy with any other plan.

Major - genuine interest
Minor - practicality

I’m so much happier now that I’m really interested in my classes.

Eenie meenie miney mo.

In high school I was good at math and good at chemisty. Combined the two together and got chemical engineering. Checked how much a ChemE, which confirmed to major to me.

Liked math, like science. Vanilla explanation from an Engineering major. Found salaries. Then I looked at the fields, and I was like, do I want to design circuits or wind turbines? Mechanical engineer.

Shot in the dark really haha. Comp sci major here, I’ve always been an avid computer gamer and computer “nerd” as some might say. Didnt really know anything about it except there’s a lot of math involved, but looking over different classes and such it seems like a lot o comp sci stuff seems interesting, but we will see come this fall and beyond :D

Been programming for a while. Want to make a career out of it.
