I am always amazed at how people just "know" what they want to do. I mean in theory you cannot really know what your prospective job is, but some people seem so SURE of it. How did you decide on your path? What sorts of tensions did you face in coming to a decision? I fluctuate between wanting stability from a job and not. I am unsure what I want in life, but I have always held the belief that a job would be the central force at the beginning of my adulthood. I like to write, I like to help people and I am an English major. I have thought of teaching, but I think another job might suit me better. I have thought of non-fiction writing but that is such a general thing (journalism? but even that I am reserved about). I have thought about getting a Masters in English Literature, but that would just be to stall time, and who wants to stall at 21??? I am graduating in December 2010: a semester late...

Ahhh I had a nice long response before my internet blew.

To sum:

1) This generation is all about being flexible, creative, and resourceful. There’s no straight up career ladder but rather a tangle of vines that we have to climb in different directions in order to achieve what we want. So don’t worry about “knowing” what you want to do with your life.

2) Writing is an essential skill these days that people are lacking. Promote your writing and understanding of the language in everyday use in the society and employers will hire you for your skills. Clear communication is even more critical than before because things happen at lightening speed and it’s important that we “get it” the first time! :)
