How Did You Decide?

neutron, did you mean you’ve been accepted at FSU? USF is 3000 miles away from any other school you mentioned except Emory. On the other hand, isn’t that a lot of money from FSU, a state school? If you did mean USanFrancisco, could you tell us why this outlier?

USF in this case is likely to be the University of Southern Florida in Tampa.

Yeah, jkeil. The University of South Florida, like simba said. Sorry I wasn’t clear. I also expect that I will receive the $9,600 scholar award from FSU and the $10,000 award from UCF.

Make sure to apply to all the honors colleges. Lots of perks.
Look at a couple more schools “like” Emory or Tulane that might offer you more money (I agree that these schools are unlikely to offer sufficient merit money so it depends on whether you have a high or low EFC.)

What schools would you consider like Emory and Tulane? and how would I go about finding some that are like them? USF already offered me the honors college and I accepted my place for if I go there.

There’s a discussion on the Emory sub-forum about schools similar to Emory. The common retort is that Emory is basically Georgia’s answer to Washington University St. Lois.

At some universities, the Honors College isn’t by invitation like at USF, it requires an application and there’s often a deadline (especially if you want to have an Honors Scholarship). So check out the HOnors College page at every public university you’re considering, and apply ASAP if necessary.

You can look into the Fiske Guide, the Insider’s Guide, or Princeton review’s best colleges.

Some ideas I can think of - note they will always have a downside (less selective, or smaller, or not located in a big city, etc) since they’re not supposed to be “ideal”. Explore their characteristics, see whether they have enough commonalities to provide you with a possible alternative, or if they match your “need” points even if they don’t have many “wants” from your wants list. Fill out the “request info” forms to get on their radar and get brochures that target you.

Some of them have the same “work hard/play hard” attitude, some are Southern/with a Southern gentleman sensibility, some are in big cities, some are larger than average private universities, some are in great college towns, some offer great merit money. Most combine several of these characteristics and all have good academic reputations but are mostly safeties (at worst matches) for you. Explore the websites to see which ones strike your fancy. :)

Thanks! Will do! The only thing is that I’m running out of time to apply haha!
