I got a 115 on the AMC 12. Is that a really good score, or is it just ok. Where would that put me in the nation compared to other people who took the AMC 12 A. Also, what score do you think I would need do qualify for USAMO. I don't think I have a chance but I would like to see what I would need to qualify. Please, post your scores if you have them or know them.

A student I coach got 116.0 at eighth-grade age on the 12A. That's a good score up to some higher age, which I won't hazard a guess on, so I suppose your 115 is pretty good too. The next step for the student in my math group, and for you, is to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination ( AIME ). Getting a good score ("good" being defined as 6 or more out of a possible 15) is not easy. It takes getting probably a higher score than that--maybe 7 or 8 this year--to qualify for the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad ( USAMO ). The national mean score on the AIME is usually around 3 or below, and the modal score is lower still. Browse around the American Mathematics Competitions Web site links I've just posted for more information. Good luck.

the national mean for the aime is below 3. I took a practice one and got 5 on it. You think that i need a 7 or 8 for this year to qualify? I think thats possible.

Going from a practice 5 today to an actual 8 by test day (7 March 2006) on the AIME is indeed possible. I don't think it's easy, but I wish you well.

I got an 125.5 this year.

I believe in order to qualify for the USAMO you have to do well on both AMC and AIME. WIth a score of 115 on the AMC, u'll need around 9-11 to qualify for USAMO. I believe they add your score on the AMC and the score you get on the AIME*10 and then rank you from there.
So, if you got a 9 on the AIME, your composite score is as follows:

115+10*9 = 205.

with an AMC score of 115 you'll prob need a 10 this year on AIME for qualifying for the USAMO

I've heard lots of different numbers flying around. One person told me that a 5 on the aime will be good enough. Some one else at school said that I will need a 14 on the aime. I know that a 14 is impossible to get. So, my guess is anywhere between an 8 and 11 on the aime for this year.

7-8 is probably okay for people in 10th grade or under, since they just need to get the floor score on the AIME. But if you're in 11th or 12th grade, I'm thinking you'll need around a 210-220 USAMO index.

5 has never been good enough, except perhaps for someone who lives in a state such that you can qualify as the highest-index person in your state. (In some years, Wyoming sends NO ONE to USAMO because no one qualifies for AIME; when someone there does, that person is a lock for qualifying for USAMO, by the state representation rule.) In my state, you have be a person with a high index (AMC + [10*AIME]) or be someone who is in tenth grade or below and gets the AIME "floor value" (9 last year, 7 or 8 most years). AMC 12 score of 115 plus AIME score of 5 wouldn't qualify either way, but an AIME score of 9 opens up a lot of possibilities.

i wasn't expecting a 5 to qualify me. I just said that i took a practice test and got a 5. I know that a 5 is not good enough. And, are you sure it is the index score for state, and not the nation as a whole. I thought it was the top in the nation.

111.5 on the AMC 12. Does anyone know what score a sophomore would need on the AIME to qualify for USAMO?

for a sophomore, AIME=8 will be OK. i think

106.5? 2 stupid mistakes...

109... I was depressed because I thought I'd got only 99, but apparently my teacher made a mistake when typing up the list of scores or something. Bah...how exactly do you study for something like the AIME?

126 on AMC 12.

Wait, where do we find out our scores?

I got a 116 AMC12 and I had the second highest score in the state. /Cheer for living in Mississippi...highest score in the state was 136 from classmate Sam Beck-aka National Calculus Student of the Year.

111.5 Amc 12b

118.5 Amc 12a

109 amc 12b, 1/4 - 1/2 != -1/2 :(
