I feel like having a dream school will only set me up for disappointment

Well, MIT was my clear-cut top choice for years. I chose it because it was suggested by my aunt, and I chose it when I was 8.

Yale - because my dad went there, and he’s pretty much a genius…
MIT - reputation I know a lot of really smart people who have gone to MIT.
Caltech - I had never heard of Caltech, but was looking at colleges online, and absolutely fell in love with it, for various reasons.

I think Yale is my best shot, since I have the advantage of legacy there. If I don’t get into any of those, I’ll be perfectly content at Georgia Tech :3

I didn’t have a dream school, ever. I applied to colleges based on towns I wanted to live in and schools that had quality engineering programs. It’s not a bad thing to not have a dream school…I got to explore so many colleges and while my college decision was arguably harder than someone with a dream school, it was still great. I got to go and visit New Orleans and see the city and look at a school that I’d never thought of applying to this time last year. I got to go out to Boston and really really fall in love with the East Coast. And I went to Chicago, planning to dislike a school and prove to my parents I didn’t want to go there, and ended up adoring it and deciding to go there. If any of those had been my dream school from the start, I would’ve never given the others a chance.

So, in my opinion, my lack of a dream school was the best thing that could’ve happened to me. Don’t be afraid if you don’t have one.

you know you search for “must have theater, must have robots” and you don’t get an awful lot back (didn’t get MIT back)

currently my dream school is EMORY I found out about it when my aunt highly recommended that i looked into that school along with vandy AND WUSTL (my #2 choice ) since im not ivy material :(

but im very indecisive so my schools keep on changing always…but for now i really like Emory :)

in the past, some of my dream schools were Yale, Penn, Pton,UChig & CMU (phase when i wanted to become an engineer…thank god i changed my mind about this one :D)

^^^ same here! when i was like 8 i wanted to go to Hahvahd …lol.

OMG, thanks everyone! You all just made me feel so much better. I’ve only seen one school on a tour so far and that was CalTech but I didn’t really feel very awestruck or anything with it. I get an awful lot of those emails and letters these days though. :/

I’m kind of lost on priorities now. I used to be thinking of East Coast, but now my Mom’s going to have another kid and I want to be able to influence her (well :P) and I can’t see that happening if I show up three times a year.

Still not sure. Still imagining myself on the East coast. Thanks, everyone!
