How Did You Get Interviews At Columbia?!

HOW DID YOU GUYS GET INTERVIEWS AT COLUMBIA!? My grandfather, an alumn of Columbia, wrote me several letters at the beginning of the year requesting an interview for me, and I have taken 2 courses at Columbia, AND I'm a deferred early applicant. How come I haven't been contacted for an interview?

There's nothing your grandpa can do. It's based on a variety of factors that have nothing to do with your candidacy. Nothing you can do besides wait.

i read somewhere on the undergrad application procedures that columbia sends out alum interviews based on how early you sent in your APP1 (you know, the two page thing with name, address, etc). It said that the ideal time for you to apply by if you wanted an interview was like October. I sent my APP1 really early (like september 3rd, if i recall correctly) and got an interview.

oh, and I live in New York City, so that probably made all the difference.

This isn't true at all. There's no "first-come, first-served" policy for interviews.

According to the Policy on Interviews, though, it says, verbatim, "The earlier you submit Application for Admission I of your application, the better your chances are for an alumni interview. If the Alumni Representative Committee is able to offer you an interview, you will be contacted directly by an ARC member." The assignment of interviews "is not conducted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions," and so you can't call for an interview, either. And interviews are held from october through Feb of every year. Lastly, interviews are held in areas where your high school is located.

That's not how it works in practice by any means. The Admissions Office has no role in the assignment of interviews, anyway.

No interview either :(. I live in NYC as well so I am expecting one.

it's still really early. They won't be making a decision until the final week or two in march haha...

To get my interview, I slept with 3 admissions officers, and paid off the others. Hey, whatever works.

Yeah, Lynxie, that's the only way I got mine. Oh well, hope it was worth it.

it all depends on geography (i.e. where you go to high school), and whether that region's coordinator is on top of his stuff and has enough interviewer volunteers.

do you go to HS in manhattan?

It makes perfect sense. It's based on random factors having nothing to do with when you send in your app and nothing to do with your merit.
