How did you get to UCLA?

Just wondering where some fo you hail from and what schools you guys turned down to become bruins and the reason for choosing UCLA over those schools.

I'm from Southern Cal...I turned down Cornell, Brandeis (merit scholarship --$40,000), Tufts, USC (merit scholarship -- $50,000), UC Berkeley (Alumni Scholarship finalist), UCI, UCDavis, UCSD, and Claremont McKenna.

It really came down to Cornell, Berkeley, and UCLA...I'm a Bruin because:
1. Cornell's a tad pricy =P, far too rural for my taste. Their gov't program is supposed to be excellent, however, and with a scholarship I might have gone.
2. Berkeley's Hillel (and Jewish life at large) isn't nearly at the caliber you see at UCLA.
3. I liked UCLA's campus the best of the three. Berkeley's is impressive, but not necessarily what I wanted. Cornell's is extremely isolated, albeit gorgeous.
4. UCLA was the "best deal." With saving/scholarships ($11,000 from local sources), I've got my freshman year covered.

I do intend on transferring to the East Coast, but I'm SO excited about next year! Looking forward to meeting ALL of you...I'll be the tiny-but-loud kid who throws out answers (right or wrong) enough to annoy not only her classmates, but the prof. too..

I'm from central cali and I turned down Berkeley Regents, UCI Regents, UCD Regents, UCSB Regents, UCSD Regents, USC Trustees, and Pomona (nada) for UCLA Regents. I liked the feel of UCLA, the area, and the overall atmosphere. Pomona was way too small, while Berkeley and the others just couldn't compare to UCLA IMO...and the scholarship money is always a plus :)

UCLA was simply the most reasonable choice for me. I am transferring from community college, and I was accepted at University of Virginia, USC, and University of Texas-Austin. My first choice Berkeley (Haas) rejected me; UVA is on the east coast, USC is very pricey, located in a bad neighborhood, and would require me to study for longer than two years, and University of Texas Austin is not in California and would require me to study for longer than two years. Also, UCLA would be the most cost effective choice, as well as the one with the atmosphere that seems most agreeable to me. I rather move from NorCal to Socal than any other area of the US. I am really happy with my decision to go to UCLA.

turned down UCB, UCSD, Stanford
1 reason: Money. UCLA is about 5 minutes away from my home. Can easily walk there and my parents could support me financially.

if it's "5 minutes away" then i'm assuming ur family's really well off, judging by the location and prices of homes there. why would money be a deciding factor in your college decision???

I flew here from lands far away.

Just graduated last June.

I am originally from San Diego, and I turned down ucsd, ucdavis, berkeley and cornell (too much $$$). I also applied to stanford and MIT but did not get accepted there.

reason I chose UCLA: well-known academics, diversity of students, nice weather/location, close to home, sports tradition(big fan of ucla bball/fball since HS), and many opportunities to get involved socially and academically.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my decision. I got a solid education at reasonable price, had some fun moments, and it prepared me well for the professional school of my choice.
