I'll answer for my son, and preface this by saying he took 2 years of AP Calc and 1 year of AP Physics in high school, while he was rather unprepared in Chem. He felt the engineering material was not especially hard. What made engineering difficult was the sheer volume of information and keeping up with the assignments. Also, there is the occasional problem with a prof who is just not a very good teacher. He has 4.0 after 3 semesters.

If you are willing to work hard, go for it!

lkf725, 4.0 after 3 semesters is very good. Which school your son is in?

My Gpa in first semester was around 3.0 and second semester it was 3.7. Now overall my gpa is about 3.4-3.6 ish

The transition from highschool to uni was kind of a shock just because the sheer ammount of work required. Things move twice as fast in university as they do in highschool.

Having said that if you're willing to work hard you should be able to make it through with little problems. You don't have to be exceptionally smart to get through the eningeering degree, the main thing is you have to put in the work to get the results.

I'm hoping for at least 3.0 for my first quarter

it didn't really seem that hard... I think it was just the laziness from high school hasn't really gone away yet. and like BoricHannibal said, it moves a lot faster, so there isn't that much time to make up for one bad test :/
yeah, I think if I worked harder/more efficiently then it would've been pretty good

Hm, it doesn't seem like there is a lot of work to me. I have tons of free time. College is definitely harder than high school.

ill probably get a 3.2...it isnt great, but for engineering first semester, i think i did well =)

I am probably getting a 3.0 or around after 1st semester. Too many honors courses and not enough work put in :(.

My GPA is pretty high. Just remember that even if you don't start off on the note you wanted to, you can always bring it up! Don't give up. You always have time to bring up your GPA.

I'm a 4th year, ~3.4. I still have similar habits as high school. I will cram the night before, but I rarely prepare longer than that.

i just haven't been able to get into serious studying.. i manage to scrape in the required assignments (like in hs), but that can only help so much. it used to be so easy in hs when good grades came easy!!
well.. first semester hasn't been too hot. finals are going on.. i'm expecting 2 A-s, 1B and a perhaps a C (Mechanics)! :( I'm an engineering major.

Mr. Payne, may I ask which college you attend?

I think i had a 2.8 or something... lol ditched too many classes

I'll just say this:

I made a facebook group called "The only 4.0 I'll see at Tech is the # of credits earned"

I did fairly well my first semester. I earned a 3.19. One hundreth of a point shy of the Dean's List (Lousy C- I got in Chem ;( )

Perhaps you missed a large and existing facebook group? "Georgia Tech: Where Your Best Hasn't Been Good Enough Since 1885." :)

Hmmm I think I made a 3.3 my first semester. Couldn't remember exactly, it's been years.

3.1 in the end...got a B- in a non-major class which was my lowest grade, and it was a 3credit, and my other two 3credit classes (chem/calc) i got Bs =( but i got an A in my engineering class which is good

lol @ the Georgia Tech group. A lot of my friends would agree.

I got a 4.0 at the large state school taking gen eds

not as good as i hoped to get. but whatever. they wernt too bad for transitioning from high school to university. and i had alot of fun too.

ended up getting a C+ in calc. never took calc in high school and never did hw all quarter. (big mistake) got a B in programming. never programmed in my life and skipped out on one whole project. my writing grade is still being processed but i expect to get around the A- B+ area. those were all of my classes. when i start winter quarter im going to have to kick it up a notch. Fall quarter was more of an expirimentation. testing the waters and seeing what i could get away with.

Can someone tell me the point in taking honors classes in college? Does it raise your overall GPA? Help with grad admission? Help with resume for internship/job?
