For the prompt which asks “how did you learn about the university” what are they looking to learn about the applicant?
I assume they are asking what stood out about the university for the applicant, and are looking for how well the applicant can articulate that in writing. Ideally, a writing response will answer the question - how did you learn about the university - such as online, through friend/family, live nearby, etc. But, will also then detail what kept their interest in learning about the university. Meaning, describing actually how the applicant learned about the university (reading online, guided tour taken, walking around the campus, talking to students/alumni, etc), and what did they learn that stood out.
Technically this is a quasi-survey question because it is an essay that also gives the university particular, detailed, and individualized feedback about how students are learning about them (gauges strength of online presence, alumni mentions/support outreach, etc) and about what features of the school are attracting the most students (i.e. location, academics, particular physical piece of campus such as the rose garden, history, academics, etc).
Best of luck.
