How did you like your visit this weekend?

I'm going next Friday the admitted student visit at College Park. Did anyone visit last Friday the 8th? I just wanted to know how you liked it, or didn't like. Thanks!

Anyone out there?

My son slept in the dorm room, he wanted to go to Maryland to see the campus prior to accepting Wisconsin. If Maryland is your dream school then I guess you would have had a good time. They were trying to bring the sprits up with the band and and cheerleaders, but the spirit is much higher at UCONN. There was a lot of good information gathering, I am sure that they did a very good job alloying any concerns like the size of the school. They broke into groups based on your school. The Dean of admissions told us that this was the most competitive class in the schools history. Good luck Maryland is a very good school.

if your son would not had applied to UConn, would you it was worth the trip, especially when one is still undecided but leaning towards Maryland?
I am between Maryland, American, Bing, Syracuse and UGA, with Md high at the top. Thank you! and good luck to your son!

My daughter goes to Uconn and she loves it. My son goes up to stoors frequently, it fact he is there today to see a concert and he has slept in the girls side of the dorm many times. My sons first choice was University of Miami (FL), but I wasn’t going to pay the 53K. My family liked the atmoshere at UW and I think it rates slightly higher than UM. In our high school the accepted students have a 3.3 GPA and about 1860 on their SAT’s for UM, UW is 3.6 and 1900. Based on the schools that you were accepted I would choose UM.

I just got back from visiting U of Maryland last week and I really liked it. I was able to meet with profs in the engineering dept and people from the honors program. Everyone was very approachable and gave me some very good information and advice. What I liked was they were obviously pro UMD but they also pointed out some issues and did not bad mouth the other schools I am still thinking about. The dorms were like all the other dorms I have seen but I thought the campus was nice and being so close to DC is a plus for me

thanks33, I am so torn, because I visited once and I like it a lot, but I want to visit now again as admitted student, to see if the vibe is there, although I am 90 percent sure of it. Money will end up being the same for all of the schools mentioned above, so it is a matter of chemistry with the school. Did the whole thing start at 830 as it was mentioned in the brochure, or started later?
thanks!

There was breakfast at the Cole center, the intro started at about 9. The first hour was a few general speeches and entertainment (pretty bad IMO). The dean of admissions then separated the groups into their schools for break-out until after 2. We left after lunch at 12:30. My son went there to sleep in the dorm on the 7th, he wanted to get the feel for the school.

I went on the 8th and besides the rain, it was a great experience. I saw the aerospace engineering program a took a tour of the facilities I will be using in the future and spoke with other students. I learned about Gemstone and the experience got me really excited about the upcoming year. I only wish I could have seen the dorms, but my dad could not do much walking because of a recent heart attack, so we decided to forgo them.

I hope it’s sunny next weekend, because I can’t move very well myself! I tore my ACL and had surgery, still recovering, called for help in transportation, they told me to rent a wheelchair in Washington, I said forget it, but I am hoping to be able to move from bus to bus. I want to visit as much as possible, because I am about to decide where to go within the next week, and I hope I decide to go to UMD! I hope your dad feels better!
Thank you for your input!

Campus is going to be a ***** if you’re not sure if you are able to move from bus to bus. (Bus to bus where? In DC or on campus? Because the buses on campus mostly don’t run until 5, and don’t cover all of campus)
Honestly a wheelchair is probably a good idea. Campus is in no way compact, but God help whoever has to push you up those hills. We’re pretty sure there was a contest to make the most ridiculous hill possible when they were laying out campus…If you’re wondering the hill to the left side of Stamp if you’re facing it wins. You’ll know it when you see it because it’s vertical.

HAhaha Gina, thank you for your honesty! It sucks to have this leg attached to a softcast ugh!
anyway, I was hoping to mobilize from place to place within the campus via bus or something similar. How do handicapped people deal with it? Thanks so much for your advise

If you are a student I know you can arrange para-transit to pick you up outside your dorm, and a small shuttle takes you to class. You can get it temporarily if you’re injured.(Honestly I tend to see injured people utilizing the service more and permanantly mobility impared students just walking or wheeling themselves to class, which I respect to no end) I don’t know if they would do it for the day for a non-student.
But you can look at it this way: If you can do it with the soft cast, it’ll seem way easier in the fall.

Thanks Gina! I can’t wait to get rid of this cast, but it won’t be for another month or so, by the time I go to school, I’ll be running those hills!
