How did your auditions go?

I just got back from 10 days in NYC, where I was auditioning for grad programs in piano performance. I wanted to see how everyone else's audition experiences went.

I auditioned at NYU, Mannes, Manhattan, and the Conservatory at Brooklyn College.

NYU and Brooklyn were terrific auditions.

Mannes went really well, though they asked me for all slow pieces (or parts of pieces) - nothing virtuosic at all...strange.

Manhattan went as well as anything can go at 9 in the morning. I'm not a morning person, and don't play well in the morning...had a little memory slip in my Bach fugue, but quickly went back a few bars and played the rest of the piece just fine.

I was interested by the different "tone" each school tried to achieve in their auditions: some casual and friendly, others very formal.

Looking forward to hearing about others' experiences.

I auditioned for Northwestern and UCLA under violin performance. I did regional for NU so was videotaped, and I thought the audition went relatively well; really, all I can do is cross my fingers and hope not to get an early rejection. The guy who videotaped me was the Admissions officer for the music dept., who I was familiar with since I attended the summer music program (NHSMI). There was a short interview and I think I said the right things to show my interest.

UCLA didn't go as well. The atmosphere there was very cold, disjointed, and uncomfortable. I auditioned for the violin professor and viola professor, both of whom were diplomatic but not particularly friendly (that was okay though since the atmosphere was more about business than warmth). It was intimidating seeing endless lines of auditioners revolving around a giant rectangle-shaped hallway leading to tiny audition rooms. The rooms weren't particularly quiet either, with lots of auditioners and faculty chattering from the outside. I played less than two minutes before the faculty said "thank you" and dismissed me. I can only expect a rejection letter coming soon in the mail, but I did the best I could.

hello everyone-this is my first post on a website i just happened to stumble upon. i just had an audition at csu fullerton for a performance major in flute. i am currently a psych major there and have decided to change it to music. csuf was the only school i auditioned for because i'm already attending there, but part of me thinks i should have done more research on other schools to give myself a higher probability of being accepted to a music program next fall. i'm not really sure how well i did-i have tons of experience with playing in ensembles but not so much in solo performance. i'm hoping not to let myself feel too dissapointed if i don't get accepted and instead look at it as a chance to research other schools. does anyone know about music programs in the CA area, such as sdsu, ucsd, uci, usc, ucr or even schools more north (san francisco area)? any help is greatly appreciated!

maxtexada...what did you think of the Mannes Theory test? That was the worst test my D ever took in her life!

LOL, it was a lot, wasn't it? Mannes was my last audition of a very long process, and getting up first thing the morning after to go take a theory test was AWFUL. I hate mornings, anyway.

Well, how did she do on the test? What was said in her theory interview?

I did fine on it...some of the counterpoint was a little fuzzy, considering I haven't used any of it in my last 18 years as a pro-musician. The theory professor asked me to please brush up on it over the summer.

The dictation was fine, but my mind was sort of jello by the end of the last section of it. I did appreciate Mannes' wanting to create complete and well-rounded musicians. Just not first thing in the morning, please.

My D went in on the day after that snow storm and we did not anticipate that a 1.25 hr trip would take 3 hours so she was 20 minutes late. She started the test utterly frazzled. She felt she did awfu...was placed in elementary theory...but she's a singer, I'm gather they expect that from singers. The sad thing is she's taken 3 years of theory - but it was really concentrated on intervals and sight singing, which was not a huge part of the exam. She just got her packet in the mail today, so I guess the theory test did not count too much.

Did you like Mannes? She really loved it best of all the places she auditioned. Having a student:teacher ratio of 1:2 is pretty amazing.

I do like many things about Mannes. Great neighborhood, love that! Got a amazing offer from NYU, so we'll have to see what the other schools come up with.

I haven't heard from Mannes yet - what part of the country are you in?

Congrats on your NYU offer!!! I heard they don't give money freely at that school so that's a fabulous accomplishment!!!

We're only an hour away from Manhattan so mail would have come quick. She did get an acceptance e-mail yesterday as well. Remember she's voice - different departments may submit at different times. I thought the date was April 2nd!

I know a string player who got his offer Monday or Tuesday, too, from Mannes, financial details also.

Any pianists hear from Mannes yet?

Got the email from Manhattan - accepted!

Bravo, Maxtexada, super news! Hope the financials are great, too!

thanks, lorelei...I didn't see that there was another letter at the bottom of the email - I was assigned to my first-choice teacher. Looks like it's all going to come down to financials!

did any pianists hear from Mannes or Peabody? i'm getting a little impatient... xP
