In some ways very similar and in others very different. Both are high quality LACs. Swarthmore is a little more diverse and intellectual, Haverford is cozier, very touchy-feely. Haverford has a much closer relationship with Bryn Mawr than Swat has with any of the other schools where one can cross register. Haverford is smaller, and at that size I thnk it makes a difference.

thanks, any one else have opinions on this?

try the haverford and swarthmore forums...lots of ppl who actually know about these particular schools

I loved them both.

Haverford is ver secluded (in the middle of the suburbs). It's like the ivory tower in a way--almost to pure in its setting, but wonderful just the same.

Swarthmore is also idyllic, a little kingdom of intellects and absolutely gorgeous. Very warm. Beautiful gardens. Everything seems serene.

On the down side:

They are both in run-of-th-mill upscale suburbs.
Both are militantly liberal with little diversity of political opinion.
Not much to offer in the big 3 sports.
Small and Smaller.

I think Swarthmore is a lot more prestgious, although Haverford is also somewhat prestgious.

Haverford is preppier. Swarthmore more liberal and more diverse. Haverford's campus to me is beautiful but reminds me of a summer camp for rich kids. Swarthmore's campus I think is on par with Princeton.

You can take the train easily from either school into Philly.
