I’m currently in the college decision making process and I was lucky enough to be accepted to Amherst. Are there any current students/alumni who can speak about the difficulty of maintaining a good GPA at Amherst? I want to apply to medical school so of course maintaining a good GPA is a high priority. Thanks!
Hard. But easy for some. Can’t say without knowing you

If you got into Amherst, you are likely capable (with hard work) of maintaining a GPA sufficient to have an excellent chance at Med Schools. Amherst has a pre-med advisor who very capably guides those on the path.
Amherst has an excellent success rate for applicants, Here is a report of Pre Med Outcomes from Amherst 2000-2004
Depends on what you define as a “good” GPA. 3.3? 3.5? 3.7? I’d say the majority of student at Amherst have something around a 3.5-3.6, which quite a few 3.7s. I, personally, have found it easier than I expected to maintain a good GPA. That being said, I am also not a hard sciences major.

Also note that for med school, GPA is broken down into Science GPA and total GPA with science courses, of course, being harder. This free site gives you a sense of what median GPAs and MCAT scores are for Med Schools. Your MCAT score will also play an roughly equal role in your chances.

There are numerous discussions regarding whether going to a rigorous college is adjusted for by Med School admissions as well as for schools that grade inflate or deflate. I would say don’t worry so much about this and choose the school with the best fit for the the education you are seeking.
