I was originally planning on applying to Boston University, but the massive grade deflation (bad curves) really turned me off, because I do not want to end up with a 3.0 in college after trying my best.

I am going to Syracuse to learn academically, but I also care about the grades I earn because they determine my future, whether I like it or not, so could someone tell me if the grading at Syracuse is fair or unfair?

What other colleges can be compared to Syracuse University when comparing difficulty of classes to earn a good GPA?
Do a lot of people pull off 4.0's at Syracuse University?
If you do bad in a class and retake it how does this work out for your GPA in the class?
Do most professors use the standard bell curve and what are average bell curves set at?

First, your grades do not determine you future. YOU determine your future! Its extremely difficult to pull off a 4.0 your entire college career and this is not because professors are unfair. Professors at SU typically are very fair in grading. Students usually either get burned out after a certain point or become complacent to the point where it begins to hurt their grades.

As for SU, difficulty of courses depends on what school you’re in. If you’re in Architecture, Engineering, Comm design in VPA or even Whitman, be prepared to work your ass off for a good GPA. In Arts & Sciences, the only majors I’ve heard students encountered the greatest challenges in are Geography, Communications Sciences & Disorder, & Economics.

I would say most Professors here are very fair about grading, and unlik BU, we do not have those stupid policies that requires professors to only give out a certain amount of As in the class. I know for a fact at Harvard theres a required first year writing class called expository writing here the Professor i only allowed to give one studentin the entie class an A. Whoever the professor chooses, he or she must defend the reason why that student received an A. I think this form of grading is a doule-edged sword if you ask me.

If you end up doing poorly in a class and retake it, povided you do better, it’s ony going to replae the poor grade but both grades stay on your transcript. It’ bette to just do well the first time around.

Vij…
Is that you on the Facebook Syracuse Page wearing earphones on what looks like your school bus?

I agree with House of London.

I, too, was debating between BU and ‘Cuse (along with Wake Forest). I am currently a Newhouse student and I would say class difficulty varies by school. Architecture and Newhouse students seem to have the more difficult classes. But, rest assured, professors are, for the most part, very fair. The professors I’ve had in the past really care about students’ success. So, if you work hard, you can expect to get a decent to good grade. Just go into office hours when needed and you’ll be fine. 4.0 GPA’s are a rarity, but not impossible at SU. Don’t stress about getting the perfect GPA. As House of London stated, grades really are not everything.

huxicon, I would say Whitman and Engineering classes are more difficult than Newhouse. I’ve seen kids throughout the semesters in Whitman struggle to get on dean’s list. Some made it and others did not despite their hard work.
