How difficult are CLEP Bio and Chem?

Hello!

I am planning to take CLEP Bio and Chem during October. I have few questions regarding to those tests. Comparing AP, CLEP, and SAT-IIs, are CLEP Bio and Chem harder than corresponding SAT Subject Tests but equal to corresponding APs?

All of these programs are through College Board. Have you called to speak with a representative to see if they have some information to share? These programs may very well cover the same material, but they are tested in completely different ways. I am familiar with the AP and CLEP test structure, but not the SAT II. I do know that if you have taken either of these subjects as AP courses and received passing scores, universities generally do not offer additional credit if you take and pass the CLEP exams. Basically they will not double up on the credit!

The nice option with the CLEP exams is they are offered throughout the year (not only in May like the AP exams). You will also know your score immediately upon completion of the computerized exam (again, not like the AP exams where you have to wait at least 2 months for your results). The CLEP exams are all multiple-choice whereas I believe the AP exams have both multiple-choice and free response sections.

Biology and Chemistry are known as more difficult CLEP exams, but if you have a good background with these subjects you will probably do just fine. What score does your university require for passing? ACE recommends a “50” but your university can set their own passing score (the scaled score ranges from 20 at the lowest end to 80 at the highest end).

Thank you for the detailed answer!

Are AP materials, such as AP prep books, are suitable for CLEP Bio and Chem?

I wouldn’t say they won’t work, but I always suggest checking out the CLEP website first to see exactly what areas will be covered in the exam (you can find the exam description with a percentage breakdown under each exam name). Some great websites to check out would be freeclepprep.com and also degreeforum.net. Do a little digging on each site and your should find plenty of recommendations on what to study. Good luck to you…

When score result will come out? Since I am going to take CLEPs on mid-October, should resuts come out by November?

If you are taking the CLEP exams at a test center that offers the computerized exams, you will know your score at the end, receiving an unofficial copy to take with you. Whichever university you designate to receive an official score report (transcript) should receive it about 2-3 weeks later.

I honestly do not know if there are any test centers that still deliver the CLEP exams via paper-and-pencil, but if this is the case where you are heading, it could be 4-6 weeks before you know your score. Your copy should be sent out the same time the official results are sent to your university.
