How difficult are foreign language courses?

I wanna take a language that I haven't learned yet, so I'd be taking a 101-level course to start. Will it be a demanding? I'm not looking for an "easy A," just wondering.

depends. i took mandarin last semester and it wasn’t demanding at all. usually, the more complex the language is (compared to yours), the less demanding the intro class to that language becomes.

I’ve just found that it’s a lot of work. I’m taking Norwegian (which apparently is a fairly easy language for English speakers to learn) and my class is every day. It’s also the only class I have in which there’s homework every night, which is supremely annoying. I think most of the 101-level language classes here are similar, but it could be different for your school.

Depends on the school. Post this in the specific college’s section of the site.

What language are you trying to learn drexeler?

I know most of the languages might require you to go to the language lab on campus once a week or once every two weeks or so. But generally the 101 class are easier. And some of the 101 classes meet 3xs a week, but they are 4-credit courses.

Going between similar types of languages is super easy.

ie, if you took spanish in high school, learning another romance language (french, italian) is easy since all of the grammatical rules are essentially the same.

mushaboom!
i was thinking about taking hindi, and i would take the first 2 elementary levels and 2 intermediate levels to fulfill elective requirements for engineering. i can either go this route or take 1 more lower level humanity course and 2 upper level humanities courses, but taking a language seems more tempting :)

Wow! Hindi? That pretty interesting. I know this one girl who was learning Arabic. I was looking through the list of languages offered under the department of African, M. eastern and South Asian studies and I didn’t realize the different languages that are offered at school, like Bengali and Yoruba. :)

If you really are highly interested and motivated to learn the language, that would be awesome to take the course(s). I think it will be demanding in the sense that the class will meet three times a week and most likely will require you to go to the language lab for homework assignments once in a while. I was trying to look for a sample syllabus for the course, but I had no luck.

You’ll have to wait until next fall though to sign up for the class because they offer elementary I in the fall and elementary II in the spring only. But that’s pretty cool :)

thanks mushaboom. i guess i’ll plan accordingly considering i still have to take expos and a required economics elective x__x
