How difficult are the classes at UCR?

Can anyone that is currently enrolled (not 09) or already graduated tell me how hard the classes there are? Like compared to school AP classes and regular classes.
If you're good enough to pass the AP tests will you be alright in the classes?

Thanks :]

Wow, this question is difficult to answer, but no worries. :)

I’m telling this from the experience of taking humanities and social science courses. I haven’t taken any math/science courses yet and those are probably different because of labs and whatnot.

Short answer: It depends on what your strengths are and how the professor runs the class.

Longer answer:
For me, my strength is writing (as opposed to number-intensive math/science) so I have an easier time in the humanities, social sciences, etc. But for other people, it’s the exact opposite.

Also, it depends on how the professor runs the class. My friend took HIST020 last quarter and said it was a breeze because there was hardly any work. I’m taking HIST020 this quarter with a different professor and there’s two big papers, a lot of reading and stuff to know for cumulative midterms and final; it’s one of my more difficult and time-consuming classes this quarter.

Hmm, the AP question is sort of up in the air because college classes are run differently from an AP class in high school.

For the AP class:

 • Entire year to prepare for one big test that doesn’t impact your grade (negatively, anyway)
 • More individualized help from the teacher because it’s a smaller class and there’s only one instructor.
 • Lots of smaller “filler points” from homework, quizzes, projects, presentations, etc.; not based around a few important assignments/exams.

For college course:

 • Ten weeks (UCR runs on a quarter system) for the entire course, so the midterm is probably around the 4th-6th week of the quarter. If you have a class with more than one midterm, then it will probably be during the 3rd-4th and 7th-8th weeks.
 • You may have a lecture class with 500+ students (usually GE classes) so you’ll probably be asking your teaching assistant for most of the help during discussion sections or their office hours. Some people never meet/contact the professor.
 • Grades normally consist of a few papers, midterm(s) and a final. If you completely bomb one of them, there’s a more obvious impact on your grade. Sometimes part of the grade comes from quizzes, participation, attendance, but that’s not always the case. Every class is different.

I’m not trying to scare you by saying that either is more difficult than the other; it’s just a new, faster-paced system to get used to, you know? During my first quarter, I was freaking out because one of my classes got 75% from 2 midterms and a final exam and 25% from participation/(very small) assignments in discussion sections. I ended up acing the class. Just stay committed to reading and studying when you have to because you sort of have to hit the ground running and there’s little room for slack. Some people can condense 10 weeks of reading into a few hours before taking the exam and totally ace it; Unfortunately, I’m not one of those people.

I’ve taken a pretty broad range of classes so I’ll say that humanities/liberal-arts type classes are usually pretty easy, and science classes are pretty hard. Breezed through Philosophy hardly studying and scored an A+, studied my ass off in general chemistry and only got an A-.

Thanks guys :]

Arcadefire, what teacher did you have for general chem?
i’m guessing 001a right?

ditto what shesasensation said!

I had Dr. Webster Jaesango

For the sophomores and up what do you think is the easiest science class?

I’m a political science major so naturally my math/science sucks…but since i’m good with computers and have knowledge of software and applications, I think I’ll do well in Introduction to Computing (my sole math requirement). So the only thing i’m a bit worried about is science…

I think ive ranted about it before on here somewhere, a quick search should pull it up: Dirty Thirty!

Biol030, bio 30, etc as it is called, is a very popular and relatively easy science class that non-science majors (mostly CHASS) students take to meet their sci requirement. oh, the dirty part? its a Human Reproduction and Sexual Behavior class, oh baby!!

Yeah I was thinking of taking biology again, I took AP biology and got A’s both semesters but that’s because his class was more of regular biology class than an AP one…I never took the exam but if I did I probably would have bombed it.

who was it that said it? ill just edit it :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

bio30, so easy even a chass major can do it, and beyonce had the best cc thread of all time, all time!!

ahhh i crack myself up, kinda.

“bio30, so easy even a chass major can do it”
LOL
