I was considering doing a double major, but after looking at the requirements:

Department of Mathematics, Courant Institute

I realized that it may be a hassle to juggle the math major. Anyone currently pursuing one have any insight?

Further info: I'm in IB Math 4 atm, and got a 5 on the BC Calc test junior year. I'm going to Stern next year.

Oh heyyy, well I’m a current 2014 EDer, and I don’t think the math major will be too difficult. Then again, as of right now I am majoring only in math at Courant (through CAS).

Wouldn’t you be starting out in Calc III?

The thing is, the math major requires you take Calc I and Calc II. And only one of them overlaps into my business curriculum. But I digress because I am now thinking of a comp. sci. major to compliment my finance major. Any comp. sci. majors want to step forward?

^ The math major requires you to take Calc I, II, and III, as well as many more advanced math classes. Math is generally considered a lot more difficult than business or finance majors, which involve minimal math to begin with. It’s only 12 classes, but the more advanced ones will be difficult. I’m not sure how many requirements the finance major has, but I hear it’s the most difficult out of stern’s majors (this is a subjective opinion though)

Comp Sci/Math together complement each other really well, and would be easier to do than Comp Sci/Finance…it really just comes down to what you’re interested in. I reccommend that freshmen year, you focus on your Finance classes in Stern, and then decide if you still want a Math major - freshmen always plan to double major, and then they change their major or simply pick 1. You can always do a math minor, which isn’t bad at all.

If you already got a 5 on Calc BC, don’t you automatically get credit for (and placement out of) Calc I and II? That satisfies your finance requirement, and the only math you would be taking at NYU would be towards the math major.

No, the AP Calc tests are only good for placement, not credits (unfortunately).

Btw, thanks Alix. I’ll continue through my schooling and see where it leads me.

Ahhh, I see. It doesn’t make much of a difference for me, but I can see why it would matter for your double major. I think you’ve got the right idea for now…and have you looked at the math minor reqs? They’re not too bad (but again, they won’t overlap with your finance major very much).

I did look into the math minor, but I figured it wouldn’t look as strong on a diploma as a major.
