I've heard different things about Tufts admissions- in reality, how selective is Tufts?

Tufts is very hard to get into…about 19% acceptance rate. SAT 25-75% range 2050-2290 according to one source. Pretty much need excellent GPA, very solid SAT or ACT scores and the likely good ECs or a hook. Definitely selective. Harder schools to get into for sure, but it’s tough to get into Tufts.

The numbers speak for themselves. And don’t let them ever think they’re just a backup for your Ivy applications.

Tufts is really selective, because you not only have to be smart, but you have to be nice and friendly as well

Tough to get into. Have a look online at the Common Data Set.

These two webpages should give you an idea of how tough it is to get into tufts and how bright your peers will be. Impressive, to say the least. Wait until you go to accepted student day and hear from some undergrads in the day’s program. They will blow you away and you’ll wonder, how the heck does any mortal get into this school, lol!

BTW, last year’s admit rate: 17%

Tufts’ acceptance rate last year was between 16-17%. Admitted students have higher mean SAT scores than a number of schools ranked higher in USNWR.

I think many applicants underestimate Tufts’ selectivity and, by extension, quality and caliber at their peril.

Does anybody know how to submit the Tufts supplemental video? Can I do that and also submit a writing supplement, or do I have to choose between the two?
My son uploaded his video to Vimeo and put the link on his application.
I never applied to Tufts, but I wish I had in hindsight–it’s a great school and should be ranked higher. It’s unfortunate that many students see it as a backup school for Ivy league applicants or associate it with “Tufts Syndrome” when schools like WashU are way more notorious for such practices.
It had a 17% acceptance rate last year, so it’s pretty selective. Best of luck!
Tufts is not only selective but elusive. Besides high academic achievements, a lot depends on whether office of admissions thinks you are a good fit. ‘Fit’ is crucial from Tufts’ point of view.
Selective compared to what? Tufts is quite selective for sure, but not nearly as selective as the top-ranked schools.
Wow. Get over it GeenIndian. Time to let it go. Your rejection from Tufts has made you a bitter person for a very long time. Can’t be healthy. Sing along…Let it go, let it go, can’t hold it back anymore…let it go, let it go, turn away and slam the door…
Among top SAT scores in the country…in top 20 schools vis-a-vis scores. Attracts very bright, engaged students. Acceptance this year: 16%.
Actually 15.8% this year, and acceptance rate has gone down 10% in the last 5 years so getting more competitive all the time.
^ makes sense. Pretty college campus in a great college town with lots to do. Excellent academics with interesting students. Son, who will be a sophomore, visited good friend at northwestern for a long weekend after tufts school year ended. Stayed four days…said the kids were clearly bright but on the whole not having the interesting conversations he hears at tufts. Seemed more mainstream & less intellectual, which is great if that’s what you want. (And I sincerely mean that in a positive way. Gotta know who you are & what you’re looking for in a college experience.) I get the impression that tufts attracts the same type of kids that brown & uchicago attracts. Maybe that’s what the admissions office selects for as a type. Saw that a uchicago undergrad with a friend at tufts stated the same on this tufts’ forum in another thread, & I agree. As for my son, his top 3 favorite schools were tufts, wash u & brown. He was deferred from brown ED, got into tufts ED2, and was accepted to wash u the next day bc he was chosen as a finalist for one of their merit awards. He had an amazing first year.
^^I agree that Tufts is extremely selective and tough to get into, but I have a different impression than the above in terms of comparing Tufts and Northwestern. I am a Tufts alum with a strong affection for the school, but I have sent one kid to NU and another to Tufts, and I found (1) the NU kids to be at least as bright and intellectual as those at Tufts, and (2) that NU is better run and I felt, as a tuition-paying parent, that it gave more bang for the buck. That said, it is really a matter of personal taste.
@WCASParent can you elaborate on “bang for the buck?” Do you mean better education, campus experience (dorms/facilities), career outcomes/support, or all of the above? Or did you just have a lower COA?
RenaissanceMom,
Anyone that considers himself/herself intellectual shouldn’t generalize based on a 4-day visit. There are 8,000 students and your son probably didn’t meet more than 20 people. Also, many people aren’t going to be that interested in and engaging with you when they know you are just a visitor and here for couple days.
