How difficult is it to do well on the AP chem exam?

like a 4 or a 5? because i'm planning on taking it next year, and i'm wondering what should be expected.

im just gonna be blunt about it:
your thread irritates me.
please don't waste threads like this and bump down other threads.
dont ask me what's wrong with your thread.

I got a 5 and answered every MC question, even the ones I knew I was going to get wrong. I didn't really study, but chemistry seemed to come naturally for me. It really isn't difficult, but is instead comprehensive.

Honestly, I'm going to say it depends on your teacher. AP Chem was one of the first classes that was a struggle for me; I felt like I was perpetually behind all year. Between the early morning labs (at school by 6:45 twice a week) and the tests that felt like being thrown in a blender with steel fragments, arsenic, and a cloud of carbon monoxide, it was a crazy year. However, I did well on the AP test.

Listening to other people on CC, it seems as though it's a hit-or-miss. Lots of 5s and some lower scores.

really depends on your teacher
i had an awesome teacher + chemistry comes pretty natural for me...so easy 5

One of the two classes that got the best of me this year. Got low grades on tests, didn't do so hot on labs, but the midterm (an AP test of the stuff we've learned) went well, so who knows? (score still not here yet >(

yeah, it depends on your teacher. My class didn't get to organic chem until after the AP test, where one of the open responses required knowledge of organic.

I haven't gotten my score yet.

A 4 or 5 is attainable. My teacher wasn't very good... I studied my butt off and got a 4.
But it all really depends on the teacher and how much you actually learn in the class :)

I took AP Chem this year without taking a regular high school chemistry course, and it was considerably hard for me but I still managed to do better than a lot of other people. However, I didn't have confidence in what I learned because it didn't feel natural to me, as biology did. The fact that my teacher wasn't really good also didn't help.

If you took a high school chem course and did exceptionally well in it, you could probably do well in AP Chem. If you didn't have the class (or didn't do so well), and if you are dependent on teachers rather than a lot of self-studying, the class will be a hit or miss for you, depending on your teacher.

With a lot of self-study, a reasonable teacher, and motivation, this class could go well for you. IT IS NOT easy material, but it is attainable.

My teacher prepared us extremely well, so by the end pretty much everyone was feeling really good. (I got a 5)

The funny thing was, he spent the entire year freaking out about equilibrium...during the month of review we had equilibrium essays all the time, with other subjects added in at times, but overall concentrating on equilibrium. The exam? Write an equilibrium expression and plug in some values.

That's not a surprise, cuthalion42. Equilibrium is ALWAYS a question on the AP test. It even says so on the AP website. :P

If you have taken a decent Chem Honors course the AP will be a breeze.
Almost everybody at my school gets a 4/5 unless they totally goofed off
through out the year. Our teacher is very good though.

actually none of the open response questions required a knowledge of organic, just a knowledge of trends, and a knowledge of inter & intramolecular forces.

[@stephennn] thank goodness the open responses didn't require knowledge of organic chem...my teacher thought it was unnecessary and didn't teach us any organic at all.
AP is rigorous, but a 4 or 5 is very attainable if you just work a little bit.

thanks for all your help guys. : )
Shubham92: hah, you don't worry have to worry, i never even thought of asking what's wrong with my thread. and if it irritates you so much, why did you even bother to reply? and plus, your reply bumped up my thread anyways, so thanks.

MC: I felt pretty confident in all of the questions I answered, but I left around maybe 7(?) blank

FR: oh gosh. I left so much partially answered (at least half of the questions). I think I got maybe 1-2 of the equations and I probably fully completed only a couple questions...but I guess everything worked out since I ended up with a 5 which was such a pleasant surprise.

I used PR to review.

The test was pretty easy. I was freaking out right before but after taking it, and realizing I knew most of the stuff, I calmed down a bit.

MC: I left quite a few blank, 6-9? I can't remember.
FR: It was very easy. I answered everything except for part of the one about the lab. Balancing equations is very easy, those should be your freebie points.

Good luck!
