I was recently accepted into the program, however, I was wondering how difficult it is to get into and if I should really take advantage of this oppurtunity??

This has always been a very high bar to get in. I have heard many complaints over the years about people getting into HC but not the premed program. They also just opened a new 60 million dollar science complex in January.

If you got accepted to HC (and decide to go) but not into the premed I understand that a place could become available anytime through the year

what are the chances of premed spots opening and getting one of those spots

I believe a fair amount of students change their mind after freshman year after suffering the heavy workload and if you are an excellent student and do well in Chemistry , the chances are very good.

Yes a lot of freshman do change their minds after the heavy workload...coughORGANICCHEMISTRYcough, but you still have to do a lot of work to get into the pre-medical program if you are not accepted to it initially. There are certain requirements you must meet in order to be admitted to the pre-medical program later on at Holy Cross. For example, you have to have a certain GPA 3.4 or up I believe.
So yes, tuftsguy71, you should take advantage of it. Holy Cross has a higher than average acceptance rate into medical school and their science programs, particularly biology, are rigorous and well-respected. Furthermore, because of the small size of the school, you have access to assistance from faculty, administration, and of course, fellow students whenever you need it. Holy Cross wants you to succeed AND have a good time. :)

*College GPA based on performance in relevant premedical courses...this makes it hard to get into.

Thanks butterfly_kisses! I'm soo confused cause i really don't know what school will put me in the best position for Bio/Pre-med. Im into Bates, Holy Cross, and Villanova. All of which have well-known biology programs. Would you have any advice of which one is the best?

According to this site:How successful are Holy Cross students?

In each of the last 10 years, for example, Holy Cross applicants to medical school have been accepted at approximately twice the national acceptance rate. For the entering classes of 1998-2002, 87% of Holy Cross applicants were accepted into at least one medical school.

I have heard great things about the Holy Cross pre-med program and the college as a whole
they seem to produce very successful alumni

My major of choice is chemistry so hopefully that would help me get into the premed program if i choose HC

very difficult! I didn't get in...poop! :(
& then they gave me the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship...wow! I"m so mad now...Idk what I can even major in to get the required courses to apply for med school..

@superwoman:-there is a list of all the courses required to get into medical school on the holy cross website under academics. Don't give up hope, just because they didn't accept you into the pre-med program now doesn't mean you won't get into it later while you're already at HC. And you can still take the same classes that pre-med kids take despite not being in the program--i have friends that are doing that.

oo, okay thanks! my dad LOVES HC, especially b/c of its religious affiliation. Thank you for the rsponse, and I am considering HC, its a great school! :)

The pre-med program is very difficult to get into and you should definitely take advantage of it if you are in anyway interested in medicine.
