What is required for admission to the UC's if you're coming from the Northeast? Excluding Berkeley and UCLA because they're extremely competitive, what are average SAT/GPA's needed to gain admission? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

My friend from NJ applied to UCLA and got in as an international applicant. His stats were 1900-2000 SAT and 4.0+ GPA.

1) Can you afford OOS tuition at $55K/year with little to no financial aid?

2) Here are the Average Stats for Freshman Class of 2014:

UCSD:: UC GPA-4.12 SAT-2010 ACT-30
UCD: UC GPA-4.07 SAT-1917 ACT-28
UCSB: UC GPA-4.05 SAT-1923 ACT-27
UCI: UC GPA-4.03 SAT-1863 ACT-27
UCSC: UC GPA-3.82 SAT-1792 ACT-26
UCR: UC GPA-3.77 SAT-1734 ACT-25
UCM: UC GPA-3.61 SAT-1630 ACT-24

UCLA/UCB: UC GPA-4.3 SAT-2100+ ACT-32

As an OOS student, you need to calculate your UC GPA using 10-11th grades only and only AP classes can be used for the extra honors points. You also have to meet the a-g required classes.

If you are full pay, you do have a slight advantage since California schools are in need of money.

From what I understand, since the UC system has fallen on hard economic times, they are looking to increase their # of OOS students because they bring in more money. I live in a fairly affluent area of NJ and they have really been sending quite a bit of mail my way and showing up to a lot of local college fairs. If you have reasonably competitive stats, I think you stand a good chance of admission. The key will be whether or not you can pay once you get in.

I can pay the tuition. Looking at the statistics, I’m doubting I can get into any with a 2.55 GPA and 1740 SAT. But will being able to fully pay even give me a shot at the worst 2 or 3?

Your stats are a little low even for full pay OOS.

Minimum HS GPA (calculated by UC method) for UC eligibility for non-California residents is 3.4.

Even for the non-impacted CSUs, your stats do not look that good: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

Like ucbalumnus stated above, your GPA will not meet the minimum required for UC eligibility.

If you come form an afulent NJ school and your GPA is 2.55 any UC will be a strech. I’d think they want a 3.0 or higher unless you have some sort of hook (born a crack baby and went to be an allstate QB, Staring in an HBO show, etc )> Your friend is correct. UCLA is on the OOS road hot and heavy–putting big dollars behind sales training for the reps to attact full pay OOS kids.

You have to calculate your UC GPA before you go any further. The link below should help. It’s on the CSU Mentor site but they calculate GPA the same way. Only enter 10th and 11th grades. Only enter the classes that meet the A-G requirements ( No PE for example.) Only 8 semesters of honors count… if you took more than 8 semesters of honors those other classes will be counted as standard grades. Double check that you HAVE all the A-G requirements as we’ve known kids in other states to have trouble with this.

Is your goal California or specific UC’s? I’m assuming just CA as you asked about UCR and UCM. If it’s just California you want, you might take a look at the CSU system though I’d think your own state system could match what most of the CSU’s can. The majority of CSU’s are easier to get into and the OOS charges aren’t quite so high (more like 30K total than 50K.)

The 3.0 GPA is the minimum for in-state students. Out-of-state students must have a UC-weighted GPA of at least 3.4 for admission to any campus. Even if the OP’s GPA is weighted at 3.4, admission to any UC other than Merced is unlikely.
