i mean.. i searched around and like umich's acceptance rate is 50%, it just gives me a feeling that it isnt tht hard to get into compare to many of the other top cc uni. is this assumption wrong? cuz i read've been reading teh forums are it seems like ppl tht gets in have good stats, my stats are like

SAT1 800m 580Cr 600wr(8) =1980
SAT2 800 chinese 730 2c 680 phy
international student from hong kong (does this make me harder to get in?)
decent grades (we dont have gpa or rank, but i get 6 or 7 in the full IB program)
ok-weak EC's

If you are an excellent student (top 10% of your class, 1400 on the SAT on the two original sections and A- or better GPA), you have a good chance. If you are not a top student (ranked out of the top 20%, less than a 1200 on the SAT and a B+ or less GPA), you have almost no chance of getting in.

keep in mind also that most students attending UM are from Michigan. It is significantly harder for OOS students to get in. I don't know the exact figure, but I am positive it is much, much less than 50%.

well, its just tht im pretty confused as to how hard it is to get in, since its admitance rate is like 50% and it uses the rolling admission, but u still need like 1400SAT and like top 10% etc to get in. bt im actually catogorized differently as oos students yeh? is the international competition hard as well?? (since i think international students are more fond off the popular schools)

I did not say you "need" a 1400 and a 10% class rank. I said if you want a good chance you need such stats. With a 1300 on the SAT and a top 10% class rank, you still have a decent chance. Just look at the stats. 90% of Michigan students graduated in the top 10% of their class and the mean SAT score is roughly 1320, with 25% having SAT scores over 1400. And that's for the students who enroll.

Given your stats, I would say your chances at Michigan are actually very good.

As for internationals, Michigan is actually more selective. Roughly 35%-45% of international applicants are accepted. And by the way, Michigan is a popular school among internationals. In the UAE, 16 out of 30 (55%) students who were admitted to Michigan will be attending this fall. That's a pretty good ratio. Most of those 16 had excellent acceptances. One chose Michigan over Penn, 2 chose Michigan over Cornell, one chose Michigan over Duke, one chose Michigan over Johns Hopkins and one chose Michigan over Cal. Most of the others had acceptances to decent schools like McGill, Toronto, NYU, UIUC etc...

And I am not sure what makes you think Michigan is not popular among international students. It may not be popular in your particular school or country, but I would say that internationally, Michigan is one of the 10 or 15 most popular US universities. For students interested in Engineering and Business, it is even more popular.

woah thx a lot thts helpful.. and yeh, by international i meant where i live and school (hong kong, though i noe theres quite a lot going there) and also asia, relatively speaking. i wasnt refering to u by saying u 'need' 1400, i guess i shouldve phrased it as 'ppl getting in seems to have 1400 SATs', from what ive read in this forum

I understand the Asian mentality. I am, afterall, Asian myself.

The only Asian ranking of universities I have seen is the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) ranking, which ranks Michigan #15 or #16 in the US. So I would say Asians respect Michigan a great deal. In fact, Japan and Korea have an even greater regard for Michigan than China because of Michigan has a long history of cooperation with Japan and Korea. But as much as the Asians respect Michigan, I would say the Europeans (minus the UK) respect Michigan a great deal more. The English rate Michigan about the same as the Asians do...top 20, but not top 10.
