How difficult is it?

I just recently visited Barnard and fell in love. I’m applying RD but I feel that I would never ever get in, and no one from my school (top 8 public in nj) has ever gone there, so I don’t know any of the stats!

My weighted cumulative gpa including my senior year is about a 4/4. Freshman through junior year is about a 3.9. I did terribly on the SAT I, but I’m sending in my ACT which I got a 30 (28 reading, 31 english, 33 math, 28 science, 9 writing). My SAT II scores are 720 chem, 790 japanese, and 690 math II. I got a 4 on AP chem and 5 on AP Japanese, and this year, I’m taking AP Calculus AB, AP Physics, AP Environmental Science, and all honors for everything else. I basically have straight A’s this year, but my junior year grades sucked! Although I have straight A’s in maths and sciences, my French grades and history grades are mostly Bs. Do I have an advantage at a liberal arts college like Barnard if I apply as a biochemistry major? I know most girls who apply are interested in the humanities, so do I have a better chance with an unpopular major?

I do a lot of ECs, including three jobs, three community services, cultural volunteering (Japanese), soccer, Model UN, American Red Cross, Science League, student ambassador, NHS, etc.

I’m also sending in an extra recommendation letter from my engineering teacher, who I’m basically best friends with. I think this will help because I was one of the only two girls in the class but I always beat the boys in every project. In addition, I’m sending in an art supplement. I think I did well on the application supplement, highlighting the fact that I’m a girl who wants to go into a male dominated field, biochemical research.

Be as brutally honest as you can be, I’m not fishing for compliments, I want to know my chances because I have nothing else to rely on since my school does not have any data for Barnard. Thank you guys in advance!

I definitely think you have a chance. Can’t say more than that. Keep your spirits up. Wherever you land you will do well.

I agree with Mythmom. Where else are you applying?

You have a shot!

Just so you know, biochem isn’t really an unpopular major at Barnard…

I think that your stats are very competitive for Barnard. I wouldn’t worry about the B’s in French giving the strong Japanese scores. You don’t have to designate a major when you apply to Barnard – and I think Barnard really encourages students to explore before formally declaring a major in sophomore year. I think its fine that you talked about doing biochemical research in your application – but I don’t think it gives you any sort of competitive advantage. But then, I don’t think you need one in any case – you are a strong applicant for Barnard as it is.

thank you all for your opinions. I’m also applying to TCNJ (2nd choice), NYU, and Rutgers, to which I already was accepted but still waiting to hear back from the pharmacy school. I will try to keep my head up and keep waiting for Barnard, I have my fingers crossed! and good luck to everyone who applied, hopefully I will see you next year :)
