How difficult is maintaining GPA for the honors program?

I've submitted my SIR and I am looking forward to attending UCSB. I am going to be an incoming freshman in the Film and Media Studies major, and I have been accepted into the university's honors program.

I understand that the honors program requires maintaining a 3.6 GPA, and was curious as to how difficult students have found that to be.

I look forward to starting classes in the fall!

I can pretty much guaranty that will depend a lot on what classes you take. Check out ‘rate my professor’ before registering for classes – if there are enough ratings so you aren’t just getting a few data points.

I’m a first year Pre-Biology major currently enrolled in the honors program at UCSB. Like collegevetting said, it really depends on what classes you take. It’s also important to know yourself and how much work you’ll be able/ willing to put into your classes. Personally speaking, it’s been difficult to maintain a 3.6 average (A-/B+), but much of this is due to the fact that I have been taking challenging classes like chemistry and physics all year–and I’m no math/science whiz.

If its any reassurance, the honors program averages your GPA for all three quarters (four quarters if you do summer as well). This allows you wiggle room to maybe get a lower GPA one quarter and still redeem yourself with a higher GPA the next. As a film studies major, you will probably be taking reasonable GE courses. Regardless, be ready to hit the ground running if you want to strive for the A. You don’t want to fall behind early on in the quarter. Pick the classes that interest you the most! I think that will be your best bet on getting the grades you want.

Congrats on getting into the Honors Program! You’ll have to easiest time getting all the classes you want! Take advantage of that! :)

Thank you both for the help! I guess I’ll make sure to do some research before I pick my classes!
