How difficult is SBCC?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a senior. Throughout high school, my GPA has fluctuated from a 1.5 to a 4.0.
Upon graduating high school, I would have taken 7 AP courses and 10 AP exams; with a pass rate of 90% (darn you, Chemistry!!).

School has never been difficult for me, just a little crazy with distractions. This is my senior year schedule, by the way...

-(AP) Physics 1
-(AP) Statistics
-(AP) United States Government/ (AP) Macroeconomics
-(P) Children's Literature/ (P) Madness and Identity
-(P) Office Applications/ (P) Life Skills

-(CC) United States Government*
-(CC) Music Appreciation*
-(CC) American Sign Language II

*online CC course.

I go to a decidedly funded public school ranked within the top 20 in California. I could get into UCSB if I wanted to (people get into UCSB with 3.5s here easy), because my UC GPA is a 3.75, but I need to start at a CC for financial reasons (and because I want to transfer to Berkeley Poli Sci).

Anyway, what are your experiences at SBCC like? Should I be worried? I think my current CC courses are the same, difficulty wise, as my school's college prep courses. I plan on graduating CC in one year (I'll have 33.1 UC credits upon graduating high school). Should I apply to honors? This is my course load for next year (hopefully).

Freshman Year (15.8, 15)
3-Comparative Politics
3-Political Thinking* (took CC American Govt, and AP US Govt)
4-Statistics, Honors* (taking AP Statistics. Most of my teacher's past students have gotten 5s)
4-Marine Biology (would LOVE to take this with Scuba)
1.8-Skin and Scuba Diving (have always wanted to scuba dive)

3-Modern Europe (I enjoy history)
3-Argumentation and Debate (captain of my school's debate team)
3-International Politics* (after Comparative, shouldn't be too difficult?)
3-American Literature* (took AP English Lang)
3-Conceptual Physics* (taking AP Physics 1)

Should I be preparing for a difficult year? How are the professors at SBCC? I typically enjoy learning.

Oh, and are there any scholarships for students who did well in high school? My family has a low income for 5 children, and I’m the oldest (1 will be in college while I’m in), so I can really only attend college if I can get in practically free.

If you are from a low income family, you may want to try the net price calculators at UCs and CSUs, since in-state financial aid is generally good for students from low income families (but you will be expected to take federal direct loans and contribute some work earnings).

Are you local to SBCC and UCSB?

I’m semi-local! Fourty five minute drive to SBCC, an hour to UCSB.

Honestly, I’d rather go to SBCC just so I could possibly ace out of it and land at Berkeley after a year.

Can I find a net price calculator for CCs?

Here are some net price calculators:
https://webprod.cccco.edu/npc/651/npcalc.htm</a>
<a href=“Net Price Calculator - UCSB Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships”>http://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/AidEstimator.aspx</a>
https://saservices.berkeley.edu/calculator/</a>
<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

However, be careful in that they may have different amounts estimated for room and board costs living at home, which probably vary little for you in particular.

What in the hell. According to the Berkeley calculator, it would cost less for me to attend UCB than it would be for SBCC. Wow. I really messed up. I could have paid less for my education, had I not given up last year (thinking I was doomed to attend a “cheap” CC).

That’s crazy for me. According to the websites listed, Berkeley would cost my parents and me 10 grand, and SBCC 11 (without major scholarships).
