How difficult is to get into CS major in UCSD

I got accepted as Undeclared. Is it possible to switch to CS in the future since I heard that there can only be a limited amount of students accepted to impacted majors.

You have two options: 1. Enroll as a CS+Math major, which is NOT an impacted major; or 2. Take the required classes and apply to CS major after I think a quarter or two. There is no guarantee however that you will get a spot, but you’d have a good shot at it if you keep your GPA up. Here’s a more thorough guideline: http://cse.ucsd.edu/ImpactedMajor

Does a CS+Math major look just as good for employers as a Computer Science major would?

I definitely think so if you beef up your experience and internship to make it more compelling.

Yes. and the CS+math major may be favored for some jobs, although the CS may be favored for others.

@Dhruv97‌ @prezbartlet‌ @BrownParent‌ Firstly the major in question isn’t CS+Math. It’s Mathematics and Computer Science. The major is a part of the Department of Mathematics at UCSD. Also, it is 70% Math with 30% CS. So in know way can it act as a direct substitute for the CS major.

@RoseRouser‌ I suggest you opt for the Mathematics and Computer Science degree only if you won’t mind graduating as a mathematician instead of a programmer. Of course, you might still end up in an IT firm, but the job won’t be programming most probably.

And as far as transferring to CS is concerned, it is “highly unlikely” said a UCSD admissions counsellor. You’re going to need to super-good GPA (almost 4) to stand any chance. It won’t be impossible, however, so you might as well give it a shot.

sorry for the typos

Yes, math + CS is a good combo My oldest son is at MIT and that’s his combo. He’s been working as a Data Scientist and loves it. Will probably continue with same company when he graduates.
