i'm considering the Art & Science program..
and i'm not sure of the chance to get in..

just considering following factors,
scholarship or financial aid(merit base, need base; merit base supposedly harder), but given its limited financial aid and scholarship amount, foreign candidates desiring those will face harder selection.

internationally or u.s. recognized awards, it can only increase the chance.

sat 1400+, gpa 3.8+with more than 2 aps per year for second half of high school, and scored several 5's on ap subjects.

good essays, addressing northwestern's specific essay quesitons concretely and creatively. Good essays mean a lot in northwestern's admission......
there is a certain math formula to roughly predict the chance. but psychologically, the more you know the more pressure you have.
best wish for your northwestern journey

check out the chinese thread if you have time

ok northwestern is really really stingy with scholarships to intl students. actually they just started giving them last year. i applied for fin aid and got rejected so i guess i'm kinda bitter about them.apply to lake forest!it gives awesome fin aid and i love it here.

tangsdaily, thank you so much for your detailed suggestions, but mainland china doesn't have APs and IBs, and the SAT has changed,so should I get a 2200 to get into NU??Is Ec very important?? Leadership??

vanillaice, i really appreciate your advice!! but I am eding NU,and eders get NO FA. So how is the chance now??

yea. i was just going to say that ed'ers can't apply for finaid, since the decision is binding, and they only have 'very limited funds'..guess they need to save some money for regular decision ppl.
i think it'll definitely increase your chance. since you aren't asking them to support you financially, while you are bringing 'diversity' to campus, also you are expressing great interested in the school. if you get a 2200+ on the sat, i'd say you are definitely in good shape...but of course, assuming that you won't bomb your essays and recs.

agree with yy.finaid is a killer, especially for us intl students.you already need to be pretty darn good to get into NU,asking for finaid is just raising the stakes higher.

lol. van, we seem to be following each other everywhere..first i saw you on facebook, then the chinese thread, then here...haha. we really should get back to work...

is this a sub-branch of chinese thread?
btw, my previous suggestion was just general informations you would find on many college admission guide books. since you are applying china, i suspect those american college admission offices would credit much of your transcript. the big thing that can pump you out of the pool might be your sat/toefl, and especially recognizable awards(if you have any outstanding talent, send them a sample in any effective form, i.e. cd, tape, portfolio, etc.) if you know any tight connection people with nwu, just utilize that connection, don't be shy. 脸皮要厚!

Hmm agree with tangsdaily, yy and vanillaice..hehe
What's so special about NU tho? Is it absolutely your first choice?

oops, i forgot to type "not" in some sentences, i keep have that problem, may be that's my generic disorder. i was saying american colleges might not credit much of transcript from mainland China, because of suspecion of forged transcript. ahhhh, so far, i can't give much insight from northwestern, since i don't even go there, nor even been there. there should be a good number of northwestern students around...... good luck

^^^ wat do you mean by utilize your connections? wouldn't that only work if you know like the dean? i mean if you only know a student... that wouldn't help right?

come to lake forest!big campuses are SOOO tiring to walk around.i mean i basically spend 3 minutes getting from one class to another here.

susannahkeer, while all of the components of your application will be important, NU seems to pay particular attention to the essays. I would advise you to read the article on admissions that Sam Lee posted on the Northwestern site as it contains lots of valuable information.

Our daughter, who is also an international student, is having a wonderful first week at NU and it is a pleasure for me to see that all of the angst of last year was well worth it. Good luck to you!
