how difficult to get 5 on ap english lang?

how difficult is it to get 5 on the ap english lang exam?

getting a 5 in any AP test is hard

From what I heard, you need a minimum of like 80 percent right on the MC (VERY hard to do, but still do-able) and perfect your essays to get a 5 on the AP English Language. I've been able to get about high 70's on practice MC, but my essays have been a little weak, maybe only in the 6-7 range out of 9.

That is inaccurate. Here is an example, though it varies year to year. The essay portion of the exam accounts for 55 percent and MC 45 percent. Normally, there are approximately 55-60 multiple choice questions.

To calculate your raw multiple choice score..

number right - (number wrong * 0.25) = raw score
Now, take the number of questions on the test and divide that by 67.5 (a set number)

So, if there were 57 questions.. your answer would be 1.184.

Now take your raw score and multiply that by this number.

For the essay section..

Essay1 (score * 3.055) + Essay2 (score * 3.055) + Essay3 (score * 3.055) = essay raw score

For your composite score, add both raw scores together.

Here is a general range for composite scores:

150-100 = 5
99-86 = 4
85-67 = 3
And so on.

Example:

Let's say you earned a score of 5, 6, and 7 on each essay respectively.
And out of 57 multiple choice questions, you missed 15, but got all others correct. So you got 42 correct..

Multiple Choice Raw Score:

42 - (15 * 0.25) = 38.25

38.25 * 1.184 = 45.29 ... there is your multiple choice raw score.

Essay Section Raw Score:

(63.055) + (53.055) + (7*3.055) = 54.99

Now, add both raw scores together.. and your composite score would be 100.28.. you would just barely have a 5.

As you can deduce, if you can write stellar essays, you need not score well on the multiple choice section to earn a 5. The same consequently applies to the multiple choice in regards to the essays.

todd, how do you know this?

i am just asking because that seems WAY too easy...

i hope you're right ;-), but it sounds like a ridiculously low grade can get a 5 with that method

It's in any good test prep book.

What Todd said sounds right. Maybe you don't realize that it is tough to get 75% on the MC. Those of you are that are scoring that are well on your way to a 5.

yeah, I got a 4 on the AP eng lang, and i remember going through the MC and being completely lost. This was probly due to the fact I thought the essays would kill me, so I spent alot of time working on my essays and not so much on the MC. Sure enough, the essays were a breeze, and I nearly slit my wrists trying to get through the multiple choice. I didnt even get to one of the passges, and there are only like 4 or 5 passages.

We did a practice test today and I missed about 2 out of 20. I can write a very good essay. Should I bother to study for AP Language aside from looking over a few literary terms?

:-( I really hope I can put this subject aside and worry about Biology and US History.

18/20 for MC is rocking. I think you're set. (you should be getting 65-80% on MC to get a 5...depending on your essays)
