Every Asian thread ends up with arguments on affirmative action. I’m tired to read the same thing over and over

First, I never mentioned affirmative action in my posts. Second, these Asian threads are dealing with how Asians are held to a higher standard, which others use affirmative action to justify. How is it at all a surprise that affirmative action is incorporated into “every Asian thread?”

Shrinkrap, still running your mouth off huh? Since you’re trying to be a grammar Nazi here I might as well join in. You misspelled sensei as “sensai”, just thought you should know. And why laugh at the prospect of Sri Lankans being a minority? They are a minority. And trust me, you don’t want to go to Sri Lanka. It’s a real crappy place considering the civil war that just finished up there.

@athavan123: Why are you so disrespectful towards Shrinkrap? From what I’ve observed, she’s one of the most helpful parents on CC. Surely you wouldn’t be that rude to your own parent.

And Sri Lankans might be a minority, but not in terms of college admissions.

That is definitely a valid possibility. However, why have you and many others assumed that he and other high achieving Asian students were denied acceptance due to such a circumstance? If this type of scenario was rare and isolated, I would agree that it would be most convenient to simply assume that the Asian student was denied acceptance on the basis of how he “carried” himself/herself. Nonetheless, I know of other similar examples, and this type of situation is rather prevalent. At this point, explaining the rejections of incredibly high achieving Asian students as being due to having ECs specialized in science/math and other “typical Asian” subjects is no longer valid. The simple fact of the matter is that Asian students with equal or greater accomplishments than their peers who specialized in similar ECs are still being rejected overly often. Again, this seemingly biased rejection of higher achieving Asian students occurs even when their counterparts of different races have ECs of the SAME category. This definitely constitutes a disadvantage for Asian students, though some would argue it to be more of a negative discrimination against them. Asian students ARE at a disadvantage in comparison with students of other races. Or would you have me believe that Asian students across the country are all naturally worse at presenting themselves, thus universally explaining this prevalent rejection?

Yes, I understand that this can’t apply to all applicants. But why assume that when someone with great EC’s, test scores, etc. got rejected because of their race? these are very competative schools. many people get rejected from top schools, sometimes over 90% of applicants. I’m not saying that Asians aren’t at a disadvantage, but it wouldn’t act as the only factor for rejection. many asians DO get into top schools as well. and the affect of affirmative action is exxagerated.

@athavan sri lankans are a minority, but everyone I know has heard about sri lanka… your first post on here was a bit extreme.

Shrinkrap is a respected member of CC!

“the affect of affirmative action is exaggerated”
I don’t think so.

It exists so take advantage of it. It is not your fault that AA exists.

^ Thanks guys!

“Since you’re trying to be a grammar Nazi here”

Really? Not my intention…sorry!

“I might as well join in. You misspelled sensei as “sensai”, just thought you should know.”

Thank You! I DID look it up; not a good source; sorry!

“And why laugh at the prospect of Sri Lankans being a minority? They are a minority.”

I wasn’t really laughing at Sri Lanka as a minority; just saying if you break down race into individual islands and countries, check out Nevis; that’s where some of my family is from. And Huntsville, Alabama.

"And trust me, you don’t want to go to Sri Lanka. It’s a real crappy place considering the civil war that just finished up there. "

Sorry to hear that… I wanted to go. There and ALL the little places in Asia.

Huntsville, AL represent! Hahaha

^ Have you heard of Normal, Alabama, or Chase Nursery? Thats where my dad grew up. Born in 1913, I think. No birth certificates.
