How do adcoms compare you with your region?

I've heard (very often) that each applicant is "compared" with others in his/her school, district, county, etc. I believe that because it seems in any given year, only one or two students from my district go to each ivy, even if one class is better/worse than the previous year's.

my question is: how do they decide which student gets to go to their college? for example, if I'm applying to yale (which I am) would they wait to decide if I'm admitted or not until they read the other applicants from my school?

Yes, unless you apply SCEA. In that case they will guess whether or not they’ll see better from your pool this year. Then accept, defer or reject based on that.

^makes sense. but how do you know?
