How do AP and CLEP differ?

Will a good AP score give you the same amount (and kind) of credit as would a comparable CLEP score?

CLEP is not nearly as accepted as AP tests.

AP tends to give you credit in a majors course. CLEP gives credit in a non-majors course.

depends on the school you go to.

Yes, CLEP isn't as widely accepted as AP, so you'll want to check to make sure your college accepts it (more likely to accept if it's a state school... I think it has something to do with making education more available to vets and such).

Like AP, CLEP can count for actual course credit, not just elective credit. My school is kinda weird... I think the departments are really picky. For example, a passing score in AP psych and CLEP psych are equivalent to different courses (AP actually gives less credit than CLEP). You would think they'd both be "Intro to Psych," but nope, they must test slightly different materials. However, that might not be the case for all tests... so better check.

Additionally, make a note that there aren't many subjects shared by both CLEP and AP. Like, AP has world history, but there isn't a CLEP world history. If your school accepts CLEP, it can actually be better for fulfilling course requirements. For instance, you could possibly take "Principles to marketing" or "Growth and development"... those are courses that are truly related to a specific major and not as general as "us history" or even general chem. But, yeah, definitely check with the school.

BTW, a lot of people will tell you CLEP is easy to BS. But that's not entirely true. Schools set their own standards. Some set them really low (like you only need to answer 50-60% of the questions right). My school required a score of 90% or better. I passed with a 94%, roughly, but I definitely had to put substantial time into it.

lol oops, my thoughts were really wandering... i must be tired.
