How do AP scores factor in?

I'm so worried bout getting my AP scores back for junior year because I was sick during the AP English Language one and AP Psych...does anyone know if Penn weighs AP scores heavily (would they be considered standardized test scores?).

-thanks

nope

in fact they're not even a required part of the application, so only give scores for the ones u did well in.

Only give the scores for the ones you did well on as abhim89 recommends. Remember that 4s or 5s on tests that overlap with your SAT IIs can cover up some poor SAT II scores, although an adcom will never admit this. Also remember that you could probably use your AP scores to show diversity if that's what a school looks for.

also doing well on an AP lends support to a good transcript. its relatively easier to get A's at certain schools, but doing well on a certain standardized test AND doing well in school shows that you succeeded in a challenging environment.

Show all your scores, good or bad. They know if you took the test and not submitting some scores, to me, seems unfavorable. Doing well looks good, but doing poorly doesn't penalize you. According to a conversation I had with my regional admin. officer, it's (ap tests) just another test on another morning or afternoon. The scores are not the definite tell-all of your knowledge of and performance in that particular subject.

I just got my scores back. I got two 5s and one 2 (in Spanish). My SAT is 1550/2310. Also I have an A- in the Spanish AP class. Should I not give my Spanish score. How will a two effect me? Also, my teacher offered to write a letter explaining that I am actutually good a Spanish, and my grade is not inflated. Will this draw unneeded attention to my 2. (Also, if it matters at all, I hate Spanish and have no desire to take it/major in it in college.)

Yeah, it's the same for SAT IIs even though those are required.

AP scores are not taken into consideration in the admission process. Anyone wants to debate please feel free to do so, since I have proof from many universities. You courses however, are the things that matter in admission. Your scores are used to gain credits after you're accepted and choose to enroll.

Straight from the horses mouth, at least for Columbia:

Thank you for your interest in Columbia University. We will see the AP
scores you've earned prior to senior year. We do not keep the averages
for the SAT subject tests because they fluctuate so much from test to
test. We do notice what your percentile rank is on a given test day.

^^^The above is surprising because I didn't mention AP scores at all when I asked the question. I simply asked for their testing policy. So, that actually suggests that Columbia uses AP scores for those students who have them.

Dartmouth:

AP score reporting is optional and in general, AP scores do not play a huge role in admissions decisions. However, if we see that you have done well on the AP tests you have taken, that suggests mastery of that subject matter, which will certainly not hurt your application.

I'm also waiting for an answer from Penn. They don't play a huge role in admissions, but then neither do SAT IIs. If you have good scores, then they won't hurt, and they can help to out a grade and even impress the reader.

Ok, so regardless of whether they play a role, a large role, or no role; should I report my 2, or just leave it blank?

A 2 really can't hurt.

Leave it blank. Colleges value the AP COURSES you're taking, not the scores. Don't report bad scores (although I wouldn't consider 2 a bad score).

I e-mailed Penn. We'll see what they say. I know there is a spot on the Penn app to list AP scores.

Thanks that would be awesome.

Thank! I've been worrying about those particular two scores for some time, but it's a relief to know that.

sure9vgirl, you can block the AP scores that you don't want them to see. I'm certainly going to send them in. More people have told me that they do see them and suggest something at several schols in the admissions process. One thing they do is they out some grades.

Anyway, I just got mine back:

AP Chem: 4, (expected a 3), A in class
AP US: 5, (expected a 4), A in class
AP Eng: 5 (expected a 3), B in class (grade capped at B+)
AP Psych: 4 (expected a 5, lol), B in class (murderous class)

Compare that to SAT II scores, I definitely will send these in!

SAT II Math II/C: 720
