How do AP test scores affect your college application?

Do colleges look at AP test scores when considering whether or not they want to accept you?

If it is different for each college, can you give a few examples or any you know?

Thanks!

I’ve heard that they do… but I’m not sure.

You don’t have to report the score, but I heard that not reporting a score looked really bad, also.

I’m sure that it is different for each college.

You list the AP scores you’ve received in the Honors section of the Common App. If you have a few 5s there corresponding to the APs you took through jr year, it obviously reflects positively on the AP classes you have taken and on you. If you’ve taken a bunch of AP classes and got As in them, but your scores are 2s, obviously that would tend to cast those As in a less positive light. The suspicion would be that there is major grade inflation or the classes were poor quality preparation. Not listing scores might lead to the suspicion that either your scores were bad or you didn’t take the tests, neither of which is positive. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t list bad scores. It’s probably better to leave them wondering than to confirm bad results! :)

As to how much emphasis schools put on this…who knows? It probably depends on the context of your application.

Considering the fact that they are usually self-reported (until you pick which college you’re going to and want credit for your APs), I don’t think there is a whole ton of emphasis put on the APs. As consolation said, it looks good if you get 5s on your APs, but getting a 3 or 4 isn’t a huge deal. A 1 or 2 and I would probably leave them off. It definitely won’t be the make-or-break aspect of your application, though.

It does vary by school, for instance NYU now accepts AP scores to fulfill their standardized testing requirement:
