How do AP's Work At Your School?

I go to an extremely competitive public high school in Florida.

9th graders are not allowed to take APs.
10th graders can take Human, World, or Euro. Generally the kids that take Euro are the hardcore overachievers (about 20 of them per grade).
11th graders can take US, Psych, Lang, Art History, Chem, Enviro
12th graders can take Macro, Gov, Lit, Bio

most people in foreign language APs are seniors but there are always a few younger native speakers

Also, Calc AB/BC varies greatly…if you’re smart, they’ll let you take whatever you want. We had a 10th grader get a 5 on BC this year.

Generally, our school has great pass rates and people tend to do well. There is no max limit of APs you can take, and stress has been part of the game for us since freshman year, so everyone’s relatively well-prepared.

Freshman: No APs.

Sophomore: Euro. (with a Euro. lab period every other day) and Chemistry (you have to take AP Pre-Chemistry in ninth grade to take AP Chem. Yeah, I had two years of Chemistry :x).

Junior: Bio. (with an lab period everyday), U.S History (with a lab period other day), and English Language.

Senior: In the senior year, students have the option of taking U.S Gov’t or Economics, Environmental Science or Honors Physics, Calc AB (you have to take AP Pre-Calculus to take AP Calc), and English Lit. My school also has AP Music Theory and Art History which I assume are only offered to seniors. *With the “or” options, students could take both if it fits into their schedule.

I see that somebody likes the French Revolution.

You have history labs? What?

Freshman: AP Bio only- and you have to appeal to the teacher and tell her why you think you can handle an AP class your freshman year
Sophomore: APWH only
Junior: APUSH, Lang
Senior: U.S. Govt (no comparative), Macro (no micro), Lit, Calc AB/BC
Junior/senior: Psych, Art, Chem, Physics

Freshman do not have the option to take AP
Sophomores: Chem, Stat, Calc AB, Bio
Juniors: USH, Calc BC, Spanish/French Lang, Physics B (+ sophomore APs)
Seniors: Lang, Lit, Physics C, Micro, U.S. Gov (+junior APs)

Not a bad offering as a whole, but the curriculum is sorely lacking in social sciences & humanities. For some reason, the course offerings are heavily tilted toward math and sciences.

At my school, you can’t take AP classes until you’re a junior. We have chemistry, biology, language, calc, lit, physics, US history, and European History and Spanish language unofficially (one of the Spanish 4 classes has a curriculum geared towards taking the exam in May). Only being able to take AP’s as a junior or senior seems to have really set me back in terms of other people who are able to take AP’s all of their years of high school and who have schools that offer most AP’s.

spirtual: I don’t know if it’s safe to to tell people the exact school you go to.

at my school:
freshman: none

sophomore: ap world history, ap chemistry (prerequisite: biology)

junior: ap calculus ab (prerequisite: precalulus), ap english language and composition, ap physics b(prerequisite: chemistry), ap u.s. history, ap biology (prerequisite: chemistry), ap chemistry (prerequisite: biology, ap statistics (prerequisite: algebra II)

senior: ap calculus bc (prerequisite: calculus ab), ap english literature and composition, ap physics b (prerequisite: chemistry), ap chemistry (prerequisite: biology), ap biology (prerequisite: chemistry), ap u.s. government and politics, ap statistics (prerequisite: algebra II), ap japanese language and culture, ap spanish language

i agree with early_college. Not a good idea to tell what ur school is.

9th grade-none
10th grade-none
11th grade- one ( Any class you did before.)
12 grade-two ( Of clases you did before.)

We don’t really have a lot of APs. You can start taking them soph year, though. This is how it would work. . .

10- Euro
11/12 - USH, Gov/Pol, Psych, Stat, Chem, Bio, Enviro, Compsci, Studio Art

Yeah, we blow hxc.

9th grade:Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese(native speakers)
10th grade:Languages(native speakers),CalcAB/BC/Chem/Bio/PhysicsB(typically top 0.5% of our class), ComputerScience(geeks lol), Stats(random kid took it this year)
11th:USH, everything from 10th, Physics C, MusicTheory, Lang
12th:Lit, Gov, Econ, everything from 11th other than USH and Lang

by graduation
average: 3-4ish
min: 0
max: 12-13ish

well here we have a separate school for 9-10 and one for 11-12. it’s because each grade has almost a 1000 kids. anyways, at the junior high level, we have AP human, AP world history, and AP euro. at the senior high we have all the APs except for i think some of the language ones (AP japanese, italian, and i think one of the latin ones).

10th graders take world sometimes gov’t
11th graders take calc, us, chem, physics, stats, what ev you are ready for
12th graders take anything (AP Lit/Comp is the only 12th grade English)

At my school, you can only take APs Jr and Sr year. If I had known about the whole self-studying thing before, I would have selfed a couple of APs soph year. But anyways back to my school. Jr year, one can take 5 APs at most (AP Enviro, AP Eng Lang, APUSH, AP Stats, AP Psych, AP Bio) but in reality, most people can only fit 3 or maybe 4 APs in Jr. year. For Sr year., people can take all the Jr. year ones in addition to AP Calc AB, English Lit, and Spanish/French.

by graduation:
avg:1-3
min:0
max:6

9th:no aps
10th:ap euro
11th:apus, ap english lang, ap calc ab, ap bio,ap chem, ap physics, ap music theory, ap french, ap spanish, ap pyscology
12th:ap economics, ap comparative gov, ap french, ap spanish, ap eng lit, ap bio, ap chem, ap physics, ap calc ab, ap calc bc, ap psycology. ap music theory,

wow ok. after seeing the number of aps some of your guys’ schools offer, i’m jealous.

We offer almost all the APs plus/minus some languages. 10th grade is AP US Gov’t only and another AP history class if you talk to a teacher / get a recommendation. Starting 11th grade you’re free to take any AP classes you want. AP Sciences you must have taken the honors courses before you can take the AP.

at my high school:

9th: cannot take AP courses

10th: can only take euro, but i’ve heard of special cases that have been allowed to take calculus

11th: can take any of the APs offered, but some of the courses are usually assigned to a specific grade (i.e. apush and eng lang are taken as 11th grade courses and u.s. government and eng lit are not taken until the next year, because they are taught as 12th grade courses.)

12th: all APs can be taken. microeconomics and u.s. government are combined as a year course and are for a semester each, so you pretty much have to take both if you want one or the other. and macro and comparative aren’t offered, so some people self study those two and end up taking four exams for a one year course.

Ours are about the same… oh! but one thing. On all tests in an AP class at our school, we get an automatic extra 10 bonus points… keeps the rankings fair and all… also lets us pull perfect 100% overall averages :)

Our school offers a variety of AP classes, but many of them are restricted to senior year, which is very unfortunate.

9th : none
10th : AP European History, AP Physics B, AP Music Theory
11th : AP Economics, AP US History, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Studio Art, AP Latin
12th : AP English, AP Psychology, AP Calculus AB/BC, APES, AP French, AP Spanish, AP Statistics, AP Art History

And in our weighted GPA we get a extra +1.00 boost, but it works exactly the same way as honors courses which is deemed unfair by many students because AP does a LOT more work.
