I just wonder, I have moved to the US 2 years ago and the max possible score I can get on SATI is 550 on Critical reading and about 550 on writing. How do Asians get above 700? Or they just lived longer in the US?

Asian friends of mine who've lived here for like 4-5 years got like 2200+.

Some are just naturally good with languages.

I got C550 and W600 when I just came here for 3 months when I took the PSAT this year.

asian is not equal to recent immigrant

there are enough asians (in and out of the US) with afirst language of english.... so why shouldnt a 700+ be possible?

4-5 is understandable. Last year I had 7/12 on district essay writting (average is 8-9, 7 is passing), this senior year 10/12, way above average.
I just wonder how they get over 2100 if they live here less than 3 years?

Oh, I was talking about immigrants, well then lets ask me another question. How come Asian kids get better scores on SAT English than usual Americans? In my pretty good high school the highest SATI was like 2230, set by one American girl, but she has been taking AP English classes since like her freshman year

i was born here, and i gota 750. thats probably why...daily exposure to the language. and i read a lot, too.

well, its a question of the person. And the language.

When I moved to Chennai, I picked up Tamil (not much, but enuf to get by) but when I was in bangalore, try as I may I couldnt learn kannada.

Its all in how easy the language is to a paeticular person

moved to US when i was 3, now i'm 16

those 13 years of living in america probably helped me get my 730 on CR and 740 on WR (12/12 essay!!!)

avg. asian kid works harder than avg. caucasian kid, so that's probably why asians score high on SAT CR and WR

Top 3 Ways To Increase SAT English scores:
1) Read a lot (especially if you haven't been in the US for very long; for people like me who have been living here for a while, reading speed naturally tends to increase...)
2) Memorize vocab.
3) PRACTICE TESTS!!!

I was born here. 800 CR- I'm just a very english oriented person... and I read a lot. I didn't really prepare for it besides studying some vocab.

I read a lot. This doesn't always mean classic literature--it's just an incessant reading whatever's around (this includes magazines, newspapers, cereal boxes, etc.).
That and daily exposure --> 800 CR as well.

well i immigrated to the U.S. in 6th grade
and i noticed that from the first time i took my SATs to the last, i didnt do anything in between and my writing score went up from 650 (soph year) to 800 (junior year) and 730 CR (junior year) to 800 CR (senior year)
maybe i was just more used to the test, or maybe i just became abetter test-taker i dont kn ow

take the SATs ur senior year, see how much it goes up

its taught to us on the raft while we're on our way to america. the poor learners are tossed overboard...

da*mn slackers...

Well I don't really know, I'm an International, an Indian, and I found SAT I english to be frankly, easy (with 800 CR both times I took it, and I didn't really prepare for it, just did papers). Maybe its just based on the amount that you read and the types of books that you read. Another factor I found important is a person's reading speed.

800 CR.

Asian. However, also happen to have been a pretty well known fan fiction author around and win more than a few essay scholarships.

It really depends on background more than ethnicity.

If you really want a high score, start devouring books (figuratively, by the way).
Overall, as long as you have basic grasp of literature, you can pretty well ace the SAT I CR (and writing for that matter).

you shouldn't specifically evaluate asians in this case because asians aren't the only immigrant group around. I'm asian but I was born here, and grew up here my entire life, which makes my SAT I scores like 700+ right? Well, I didn't score that high. Anyways, I just suggest you to think about immigrants, in general, or people who have just come and not asians specifically. I know what i'm saying is trivial, but i just wanted to clear that up.

Lol, guys, I don't need to take SAT in my life (I will go to UC Davis), I was just wondering is it that I am so stupid and I cannot get above 600 on any English section on SATI. At least know I know that I lived just 2 years and did not have enough time. And don't worry guys, I read books all the time :) Helps to improve English

My friend from Thailand got 420 in his verbal section, yet he won the gold medal olympics for math and physics, and got invited to go study at MIT by their representitive, and they even paid for his personal expenses eg. dorms, student fees... wow crazy rite..!!

My point is even a 420 in verbal got into MIT, so no worry guys... unless if u get lower than 200 :P

um...not all asian kids get high verbal scores. and those that do, do it like everybody else does it. Studying and practicing.

I'd say they generally work harder. I'm an Asian. It's all about how much you read. Read more = Higher SAT's. I better get to reading -_-" steada being on CC. Cya guys. =]
