Does anyone know anyone like that? You know, the ones that went to some inner city school and was ranked #1 in their class, but had like a 1500 SAT score for whatever reason.

Do they tend to do below average at Cal?

It varies. I don’t know of any public stats that Berkeley keeps that would give you a solid answer, but the resources are there for someone with low stats to do well if they apply themselves. There is free tutoring available for all majors and programs/clubs that focus on helping low-income students adjust to the academics at Cal. I have friends with low stats who ended up with nearly a 4.0 in engineering, but I also know people who were overwhelmed and ended up transferring or dropping out. The resources are there to help you succeed, but in the end it all depends on the individual.

You can dig it out of [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu) .

It is no surprise that students with better high school GPAs did better in Berkeley GPA on average than students with worse high school GPAs. But there is considerable individual variation.
