How do BFA's work?

Hi everyone :) I'm new to this site but I was looking at my first choice school (csu fullerton) and want to (hope to be good enough) for a BFA in acting. But I don't know how that works application wise to get on that track, when declaring my major, do I state a concentration in acting as a freshman? I know BFA auditions are sophomore year. Also does the fact that I'm applying to the theatre department change how my application will be viewed? If you have an answer or know where I can find it please let me know :)

Hi @Cambriadel. I recommend you call CSUF’s theatre department and ask them these questions. You don’t even need to tell them who you are, just identify yourself as someone interested in studying theater/acting there. I don’t know about CSUF’s specific program because it wasn’t one my daughter looked at, but I glanced at their web site. I assume you read the acting letter/pdf that is out there explaining the program. It does sound like you just apply for the BFA program and then must audition at end of sophomore year, like you said. But in your journey this year we found schools were very open to talking about their programs and the audition/admission process.

Also, not sure what you mean on the question about how the application will be viewed. Are you talking about admissions for the university in general? If so, your intended major won’t matter that much to them, they are looking at the courses you took in HS, test scores, etc., to make sure you meet the university’s admissions requirements.

My daughter and I spent a lot of time with the director and got some very interesting information. PM me and I will share what he said.

You should research and visit multiple schools, though. I don’t know many kids who ended up attending the school that was originally their first choice.
