How do chances change with medical problems?

I'm just wondering if an application is looked over again or a bit more if the applicant has documented medical problems that has affected their GPA, test scores, etc.

For example, I have fibromyalgia combined with severe back problems which causes me to miss a great deal of school and makes it extremely hard to take standardized tests (my ACT and SAT scores are dismal). I show that by taking difficult classes I do try to challenge myself despite facing physical problems. I want to know if I should write an essay about it or mention it at all... I don't want to make it sound like a sob story or try to make it look like a scheme to make myself look better (because in interviews I'd look normal... I don't have a wheelchair, a cane or anything clearly marking that I have physical problems), but I do want to explain what has happened and what is going on. :/

I know documented medical problems doesn't automatically excuse low GPAs, test scores, etc. but what does it do for an applicant? Does it tell an admissions officer that they're able to deal challenges, etc? Do they get an extra read?

Thanks!

Bump.

Really? Can no one on CC really not know? :(
