How do college students usually watch TV?

I'm one of those people that doesn't sit down and watch random TV, even when I'm bored. Never having had a television in my own room will do that to you. But anyways, I do make a point to try and catch new episodes of my favorite shows when they come out every week. Like right now I watch Community and Game of Thrones, and I'm looking forward to Breaking Bad starting again this summer.

Problem is, sometimes I miss the episodes on TV, and sometimes I don't even have HBO. So occasionally I torrent episodes that have just aired and just watch them on my laptop.

From what I hear, torrenting is strictly moderated in college. I downloaded a few movies or albums years ago, but I don't do that anymore. Thing is, these newly-aired TV episodes aren't available anywhere online (since, for example, HBO is a paid subscription) and they're usually not out on DVD until almost a year after they air on TV. So I don't even consider it illegal, since I usually buy the DVDs when they come out anyway. But I'm getting the vibe that I won't be able to torrent episodes like this when I go off to college.

I'm choosing between going to the University of Washington and Boston University, and I visited BU. The dorms we saw had someone's little TV monitor standing there, but I didn't ask if TV channels are provided to people dorming, like wi-fi is.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Are common rooms usually where people watch their weekly TV?

I’ve used Hulu Plus mostly. Sometimes, they can be a week behind but it is better than nothing. I also hated paying for it and still being forced to watch ads but I needed my Bad Girls Club fix.

Oh! YouTube. Or if it a show I love, I’d pay the $1.99 for the episode from iTunes. That was rare, though.

First world problems

My college does not have cable in individual student rooms but the common rooms do have cable TV (no HBO, however).

Hulu has many popular shows for free - and completely legal! If you want to watch HBO shows legally and at your own convenience, you could pay for an HBO GO subscription and get access to the shows online as soon as they air.

Torrenting is generally a really bad idea because torrents are super easy to track for a third party. It’s not only colleges that monitor torrents; copyright holders do it too. It’s much more difficult to track files downloaded directly from a file storage server, and colleges generally don’t monitor those. However, getting HBO movies that way is just as illegal as using torrents.

I live in a suite-style dorm, so the TV is out in the common room of our suite (so my roommates and I don’t have to go to the main student lounge to watch TV).

I also second using Hulu, although for some shows, you need to have a Hulu-Plus account to watch them.

Is there any difference between torrenting them from public trackers (piratebay) vs. doing it from private trackers that are invite-only and relatively exclusive?

Hulu & Netflix for when I’m in a dorm, regular oh-so-amazing Direct TV when I’m at home:)

Easiest way to find out about a college’s stance on filesharing is to ask around before sticking your neck out. Here at Grinnell, they limit torrents to godawful speeds but don’t seem to be able to do anything about direct downloads.

People still use torrents? Wow.

don’t ban me bro…not sure if against cc policies.

You can find new episodes everywhere online.

I use torrents (I know… bad), and recently my friend put his HDTV in my room, so I’ve been watching shows when they’re on TV. That’s new, since I’ve never had cable before :)

All the dorms at my college have full cable connection with like 70 something channels, so mainly I watch TV in my room, on the TV. Otherwise I just find them online somewhere, no torrents, you just have to search a little.

TV-Links FTW…and sometimes Hulu.

It depends if you live in a suite or traditional dorm. When I lived in a suite last year with our own living room, we all watched a lot of TV, it was ridiculous. Haha Now that I’m in a suite again but without a living room, just a bathroom, we still occasionally watch TV but mainly at night.

I watch most of the TV on my laptop now. I don’t really know what’s on TV these days, schedule-wise.

And yes, First World Problems.

this topic is old much now but want share my some great finding to watch tv shows

Sidereel.com.

via laptop, of course…

I downloaded many torrents of TV series (and movies, music, and games) to my dorm via a VPN, bypassing my school’s global BitTorrent throttle.

Letmewatchthis.com and I’ve never heard of kids gettin busted for torrenting

Do colleges care if you stream shows on your computer using sites like letmewatchthis? Is it only torrenting and downloading that they care about?
