Questions on how colleges recalculate GPA
do all colleges (not including art school) take music and art classes out of GPA calculations? Even AP Art?
Will catholic colleges (BC, Georgetown) take Catholic theology courses (I go to catholic hs) out of calculations?
My school includes extracurricular debate on my transcript as a pass/fail course because it is so time consuming. Will colleges take this out?
I am part of an enrichment program at my hs, basically includes reading and writing about classics/literature, taking on projects. We are graded on this, so will colleges likely include this in GPA calculations?
It will vary by the school. I was told UVA only looks at core subjects - for them, math, science, English, history and foreign language. Schools all do it differently. And most won’t spell it out.
It depends upon the college, and few colleges will tell you how/if they recalculate GPA. At the end of the day, it is what it is. Some will just accept the transcript as presented. Some will include all classes. Some will just count core subjects.
If it’s P/F, it does not impact your GPA anyway (unless you fail), so it’s really a moot point.
–Don’t worry about things outside of your control.
–Some colleges do recalculate GPA and it can be done in a number of different ways (ex. unweighted, academic subjects only etc.) It is rare that a school explains if/how this is done.
–Don’t assume that only Catholic colleges consider subjects like theology/philosophy to be core academic subjects – I have heard an admission counselor from a secular school say that his college regards those to be academic classes.
My dd emailed the admissions reps for the schools she’s interested in, and though there were a couple of exceptions, most have been very forthcoming with what they do/don’t do with a gpa. We were surprised that about half use the weighted gpa that is sent by her school, as this is not what is commonly discussed here on CC.
