how do colleges calculate unweighted and weighted gpa?

how do colleges calculate unweighted gpa? (like what do they use for an A, A-, B+ etc.)
and how do they calculate weighed gpa? (what do they use for an A, A-, B+ etc. and how do they weight AP classes)

thanks

There's no single way. Each college has its own way.

how do most top universities calculate unweighted and weighted gpas?

again, different schools do it different ways. You might want to check website to see if that info is posted, or you can contact the admissions folks. There is no way to answer this in any general way.

Even your high rank colleges differ. But basically: (a) they use only grades from college prep courses – math, lab science, language, social studies, and English and ignore other grades (although some like UCs also use art or music); (b) they take the unweighted grades and then apply their own weighting system to honors or AP courses. What weighting system they use varies. Also, some, like UCs, do not use freshman grades, and some ignore pluses and minuses in grades. There also a number of colleges, e.g., UIUC, that do no recalculation but rely instead mainly on class rank and estimate it if school does not rank.

do they differ between an A- and an A while calculating unweighted?
because ive heard that they just look at the letter, rather than the - or the +

Some do, some don’t.
