How do colleges determine how much need-based aid to give you?

@mom2collegekids Yeah, my net price is a bit lower for MSU. I am very interested in MSU because I’d be invited to the Honors College, and I qualify for the PA program. I am also interested in University of Alabama because I am eligible for the full tuition scholarship + $2500/yr. Would University of Alabama award me financial aid on top of that scholarship, or does their need based aid only count towards tuition and fees?

My suggestion is to apply to all these schools and wait for the financial aid package to make decision.

I agree with Billsho. Also look for other schools where there are good merit possibilities, Those schools that require PROFILE often also want both parents’ incomes in divorce/separated situations. If the Non custodial parent has sufficient income/ assets that a sizeable contribution is expected from her/him and that parent will not pay or if that parent refuses to fill out the NCP PROFILE, and you do not meet the requirements for a waiver, you may do better at a FAFSA only school. They do not require NCP financials and so only your mother’s financial situation is taken into account in the calculations. However, no school guarantees to meet full need as defined by FAFSA EFC.

How all this will play out is therefore, up in the air. Give it a go at several schools, and make sure you have a school you know you can afford and that you know will take you on the list.
