How do colleges know if your score is good?

Do they just combine your math and verbal and then compare to the national average? Or, do they just compare your score to their own freshman class's average SAT score? Or, do they compare it to your own school's average? My school is okay (SAT average slightly higher than national average by 50 pts)- I scored really high on SAT compared to my classmates, but my score is not in 25-75% range of colleges I want.

They don't compare your school average - - - some would be too high, some too low.

they compare it to the other applicants for that school. so basically, the cumulated 25%-75% is what you want to atleast get.
