I'm planning on taking two online classes next year (sophomore year). I'm going to take Intro to Economics and Psychology. My school does not offer either of these classes and I'm fascinated by both of them. I'm going to take them regardless, but I'm curious in general if colleges look higher upon or look down on online classes.

I'll be taking my 5th-9th online class next, my sophomore year. For me, it won't be indicated that these were online. My school doesn't offer the level of classes I need, and I can't expect them to. You may want to mention going above and beyond, and ask your registar/ data manager if it will even be indicated.

Will these be through a college, or through an online provider?

It will be through Virtual High School.

Put yourself in colleges' shoes and see how you would view it.

It's probably not equivalent to a regular class, but you wanted to do something and didn't have the opportunity to do so. Thus, you seek out opportunity thru online classes.

At worst, it will be neutral. You should go ahead and take those courses if you are taking them for much more than colleges.

I don't believe many schools even indicate on the transcript whether or not the class was online. None of my online classes show up like that. My transcript just shows the title of the course and then the name of teacher who teaches it. I don't think there are ways for colleges to know outside of you telling them.

I don't believe my transcript even says who taught what. I had to fight to see it.

But in my case, it's Face-to-face honors courses vs. Online AP classes and college courses.

NCVPS, FLVS? Could you PM me?

Isn't it sad that we live in such a world that we can't do what we enjoy? :(

I don't think colleges would look down upon online classes, if anything it might be a plus. Most likely it's a neutral view if they even know that the class was taken online. On my transcript, there is no way to differentiate the 5 classes that I have taken online from the ones that I've taken at school. If anything, taking an online class shows that you have the ability to handle a self-paced load possibly on top of your normal workload and that you have the self-motivation to get it accomplished. I've enjoyed most of the classes that I've taken with FLVS, especially since it gives me an opportunity to learn far more than what is taught in many of the sub-par classes at my school.
