Not sure in which forum I should post this question but here goes… just out of curiosity, how do colleges track the digital footprint of a student’s interest in their school if a student uses a mix of different computers (a shared home computer, or a smart phone/tablet, or their personal laptop)? I can understand how they track interest through “events” that a student signs up for and then attends via the link they provide. I’m just curious how colleges track a student’s interest when the student is browsing/researching the website and not signed up for an official “event”.
If you click on a link in an email that a college sends, the school might be able to tell (via “cookies” on the computer/tablet/etc.) whether the student who received the email spends time on the school’s website.
Basically, for all of the stuff you might do to avoid being tracked reading web pages or email or whatever, turn it off when using the college web site or reading email from the college. For example, show all images, accept all cookies, click on links in the email, stay logged into the college applicant portal while browsing the college web site, etc…
Thanks for your responses. I’m sure it is really helpful for the school to be able to track things but it is a bit creepy how they can “see” how much a student engages with them online outside of virtual visits etc.
